Biomedical Engineering/BioEngineering PhD 2010 Interviews

@wheretogonext, yea i think it takes some time for them to send out the news… the letter was dated Feb 15, but they emailed me on Thursday Feb 18… hope you hear some good news!!

@synthbio when they say forwarded to MCBB, do they mean they do it for you or you have to reapply next year. Also I am guessing competitive applicants in that dept. will have also taken GRE subject tests? BTW you applied for PHD or masters?

Thanks

@hopefulgrad They will do it for me this year. I originally applied for post-master’s Ph.D., and I have not taken the GRE biochem subject test.

I just received acceptance email from BU with a fellowship of $27,600 for the first year!!
First one, so happy!!! :D

Hey guys,

After checking this forum for a month, I finally decided to sign up and start talking.

I’ve been rejected by three schools and expect more rejections based on everyone else getting interviews/acceptances already.

I did get accepted to Minnesota’s BME PhD program though. It comes with a $23,500 “fellowship” for the first year, and then it’ll switch over to faculty RA-ships and TA-ships.

I honestly don’t know too much about UMN’s BME program, besides the fact that it’s got a good amount of microfluidics/BioMEMS research which is what I’m interested in. Do you guys think this is a decent program?

Thanks!

@synthbio what’s your undergrad major?

@atheratherather chemical engineering. have you already been accepted to BU BME? if so, what’s your undergrad major?

Guys… Is anyone here still waiting on results from Duke ? Any idea what the chances are to get thru in the last batch of students in March interview… Also, is it a good idea to speak to the professor with whom I intend to work ?

Hey itssaan, I too am waiting for interview invitation from Duke…I remember somebody in this forum mentioning there would be 10 more to be invited. I contacted a professor in Duke long ago, and got very positive response. But I’m not sure whether I should contact him again to ask about my application…

How about MIT, anyone knows whether they’re still sending out invitations? …

Update: i just got admitted to UCLA BME IDP. But they mentioned it’s highly recommended to contact the professor for an interview on Open House day (which I’m unable to attend). I think this is necessary for funding, since they do not have lab rotation…

update

stats: 750Q, 500V; 3.96 GPA Biochem major

applied: Hopkins, GA Tech
interview: UNC, Purdue, Duke
accepted: Purdue, Duke
rejected: MIT(MEMP program), UMCP
waitlist: Rice

ill be going to Duke in the fall

congrats, falesafe! so did they tell you that you were accepted after your january visit? The prof I had a phone interview with said that I would probably find out April 1, so I assumed that they were going to wait until all three visit weekends were done. Did you get an official admit, or did the prof your going to work with tell you that he was going to accept you?

Hopefully I’ll see you there in the fall! If I am accepted I’m definitely going :)

Thanks lpolstein. The professor said that he was going to admit me and he just had to check his funding first. I believe he recommended me for admission to the graduate school about 2 weeks ago, and I got the online offer of admission today. It probably varies depending on the professor whether they want to wait to meet all of the students or they offer you admission as soon as possible(i.e. they don’t have to meet with any other students for the following visits).

Hello Guys, I have applied for PhD program in Biomedical Engineering at JHU , GATECH and university of Pittsburgh and have not heard anything back yet.

Latest update:-

JHU:- Got a reply from program coordinator that all interview decisions have been already mailed. Was not sure if they send the denials or not.

Gatech:- Program coordinator said that all interview decisions will be made final by 15 of March. They are still working on many applications. Keep your fingers crossed who are still waiting.

Pittsburgh:- No word yet. Online system just shows status as application complete.

Any word on any of these universities would be much appreciated.

Congrats to all those who already got invites.

@biopuzzle I got acceptance letter from Gatech and UPitt… Gatech got last week, i think, and UPitt yesterday… Pitt’s visit is next week, and Gatech is last week of march.

JHU i didn’t apply so i don’t know…

Just read these for the first time and have to say it’s a little discouraging. Got my Stanford rejection earlier this month, which was a bummer, especially since I did my undergrad there. I’m 27 and have been out of school for 4 years and don’t have a great idea how the admissions process to BE/BME PhD programs works. Figured I’d have a pretty good chance though: graduated with distinction (top 10%) in an engineering major from Stanford with a co-terminal BS/MS and a 3.89 GPA in the masters program, and have a few lab publications, 4 years of biomedical industry experience (last 2 as an R&D Engineer at a start-up developing a completely novel product with HUGE potential), very good recommendations, etc. I’d think that work experience and already having a great job (i.e. I’m obviously not going to grad school out of desperation or because of the tough economy) should count for something. Who knows.

I applied to only Stanford, UC San Diego, and MIT this year. Figured those were the places I really wanted to go and that I would consider more places next year if they didn’t work out. Also applied for the NSF and think I’ve got a good chance to get it.

Having heard from Stanford (which threw me for a loop) but not yet from MIT or UCSD, am I pretty much S.O.L. here? Sounds from others like that might be the case. If I were to get the NSF but not get in anywhere, would I have any recourse to go back and try to get them to reconsider after I had been awarded the fellowship?

I would be pretty bummed to be rejected across the board since I’m already considerably older than most of people who are applying and want to get started with this ASAP.

Thanks everybody! Good luck to the rest of you.

@uneoao congrats to you for all your acceptance. Great work buddy.

So when did u complete your applications to Gatech and UPitt.

Anyone in the forum who has applied for the NeuroEngineering track in JHU , GATECH or UPITT and got an acceptance already.

@biopuzzle thanks!
gatech I submitted at the end of december, and pittsburgh I completed the online app on november but my GRE score didn’t get there till january 28, so that’s when the department got my app.

@unaoeo
Thanks for the info. My application packet reached at Gatech in the department on 17th Feb and Pittsburgh (Department ) on 23rd Feb. Looks like I will have to wait for a little longer for any decision on them.

Called UC San Diego today and it sounds like they’ve mostly finished their interviews (or finished sending the invites at least). No official rejection yet for me. They said something like, “You are a very strong candidate and we want to see if we can get you on the waiting list, but I wouldn’t count on it.” So for those who haven’t heard from UCSD, your chances are probably very slim but not quite zero.

This process is pretty brutal overall. Guess it’s time to start planning to apply again next fall. I’ll probably be 40 by the time I actually get my PhD. Crazy how much competition there is for the right to be forced to do 4-6 years of grueling work while living in borderline poverty. Maybe I’m getting rejected because they think I must be insane to be leaving a good job in industry for this!

Rejected: Stanford
Probably rejected: UC San Diego, MIT
Accepted/interview: goose egg
NSF - who knows?

@synthbio yeah, I am. mine is bioengineering.
