Hi Guys,

I’ve been checking out this site and the Grad Cafe for a while, freaking out because I have no fellow PhD applicant buddies, so I thought I’d grant myself some piece of mind and just join already and add to the collective knowledge.

Stats:
Penn BE Undergrad
GPA 3.52/4.0
GRE Q770, V720, A5

Applied: UMich, Pitt, Cornell, Duke, GaTech, UW-Seattle, UCSD, MIT, UW-Madison, Case, Columbia, BU (yes I’m a psychopath)
Interview Invites: UMich, Case, Columbia
Accepted: UW-Madison
Rejected: UCSD, UW-Seattle (expected, I applied to top programs like a moron.)

Hope this helps.

Oh, and I should probably also mention that I also got one of those emails from Cornell on 2/5 saying that my application materials had been put together and were being sent for review. No idea what that means since it’s been like a month and no response.

@SoFrazzled- thanks for the info! When did you get the invite from columbia? was it by phone or email? is it for the bme department? and is it for a phone interview or visit, and if it’s a visit, when is it? you’re the first person i’ve heard of that’s heard back from columbia…and now im a little worried that i haven’t heard back! sorry for the 800000 questions. :)

@lpolstein - no worries! I completely understand, I feel exactly the same way about all the MIT/Duke/etc. I got an email from the department (Dr. Henry Hess?) on 2/12 for a visit. Interview is next weekend, March 4-6. And yes, it is for BME.

Guys… I guess this is going to be a bigg week… Duke would send out its last set of interview invites either today or tomorrow I guess… And historically Cornell also send out offers by 1st week of March… though they have already given out a few… Please let me know if anyone receives something from these 2 univs…

Congrats @SoFrazzled for the interview invite from Columbia ? Did anyone else get anything from Columbia ?

i emailed a prof there, and here’s what she said:

“We are now interviewing our top applicants, and after this first round of interviews and decisions, we will be getting back to the next tier of applicants. So, you should hear from us within a few weeks.”

guess we’re not in the first tier. haha. congrats sofrazzled!

just got rejected by mit be. =(

Called a Prof in Cornell… this is what he said “The decisions are made by a committee of faculties and I’m not in that committee(even though I had expressed interest in working with him for my PhD), so I do not make the decision of who is admitted and who isn’t. But if your query is when you can expect the admission decisions, I think the acceptance decisions have all been sent out already, though I’m not 100% positive”
Last thursday, when I called up Belinda Floyd to know the status of my application, she said it is complete and it has not been reviewed yet… I really do not understand their process… Do they just not review all the applications before giving out decisions ??

it seems that way, which is really weird because i feel like that means that the people whose apps are reviewed later are all at a disadvantage bc some spots are already filled. gahhh i just want to hear back from these schools already!

OMG, I just saw a bunch of posts in gradcafe about rejection from MIT BE.
I have yet received any
About Duke, I received a reply from the prof I contacted previously. He told me that he had filled up his slot for next year. So expecting a rejection soon…

officially rejected from MIT. :(

Rejection from MIT. Thought I had a great shot there a month ago. What exactly does one need to do to get into these programs? Already have a Nobel Prize?

@bme1983 seeing you get rejected from MIT gives me “what hell was I thinking” feeling.

Anyone hear anything from Duke/Cornell/Columbia apart from the few who have got invites/admissions last week…

I haven’t heard anything at all from USC, CalTech, GaTech, UT Austin, Cornell, Harvard, Wash U, Case, Northwestern, or Michigan. Probably struck out at all of those. :-/

I wish they would tell me sooner that I didn’t get in so I wouldn’t pin my hopes on something that isn’t going to happen. :(

Hi all,
Joining the party super late.
Waiting on Columbia and Harvard, accepted to Northwestern, visiting tomorrow!
ANY news on Columbia and Harvard would be much appreciated. I heard Columbia has released interviews for the first round, their first interview weekend is this weekend. Does anyone have ANY more info about Columbia?
I also think Harvard is a lost cause…

@sofrazzled:
Congrats on the Columbia interview! I’m hoping to get an invite as well…did you get any information about future interview weekends?

@lpostein
What prof at Columbia did you email?

Updates:

Waitlist: Yale
Rejected: Mayo, MIT

memories2010, i’m surprised you got wait-listed at Yale, but accepted to Northwestern and Stanford. Congrats on those admits!
