Biomedical Engineering

I wanted to know if we can become a genetic engineer after doing a major in Biomedical Engineering?

Ask in the engineering section, they will have better answers for this question.

That said, an undergraduate BioE degree will seldom open up high ranking jobs in the biomedical field without a lot of experience. But yes you should be able to work as an GenE with BioE undergrad since I believe undergrad BioE can go into graduate GenE programs.

Thanks a lot for letting me know.
I actually plan on going to a medical school after Undergrad in BioE.
What do you think of it?

@leghost Honestly, because of the difficulty of keeping a good GPA. In general I tell most people who ask this question to go with pre med Biology or a pre med liberal arts degree (such as English or Philosophy). You really need to ask yourself “do I want to be an engineer or a doctor?” because for the vast majority of even highly skilled students, it’s one or the other.

Yeah it’s going to be doctor for me then.
What would you prefer as an undergrad degree then?

@leghost, The best major to take is one where you can get good grades in, that said most people take biology. but personally I would take philosophy (or business if you want a fall back career). The medical schools don’t really care about your major as long as you can keep a good GPA,take the pre requisites, and score well on the MCAT.

Thanks a lot for your valuable opinion and time. I’ll surely look onto it and choose the best option.
Moreover, could you help me by letting me know the minimum SAT Score I should be aiming for; being an international student in US?
And please also shed some light on extra-curriculars?

@leghost depending on if you are taking SAT with Essay section or without you should aim for 1200+ (without essay) and 2000+ (with essay) although I don’t believe medical schools actually care about SAT scores (only undergraduate institutions care). as for extra-curriculars, medical volunteering is a MUST (I’d aim for at least two summers with volunteering in a hospital/nursing home/clinic on Saturday or something comparable) Maybe helping impoverished children and food/blood drives (donating or helping) Habitat for humanity and any other thing that involves improving lives. College sports teams and clubs are a plus+ but not required (shows reliability I suppose) and leadership roles are a big plus+ (shows you are capable as a leader of men) for any selective school/med school. Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) is also an option for medical volunteering, but I do not know much about it so I cant really talk about it but here is a link to their website; http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/work-us/work-field

Thanks a lot for your valuable advice @ultimablade and I highly appreciate it.
I actually am worried about my Undergraduate as of now and am looking to build my CV for that.
So you mean I should do some community and voluntary work and also do an internship at a medical center for a better profile?
How do you think I can show my leadership skills?
Thanks once again. I’m sorry for being so foolish asking such questions.

“So you mean I should do some community and voluntary work and also do an internship at a medical center for a better profile?” absolutely.

As for leadership skills, becoming manager at work is one way, but hard to do since you cannot devote a lot of hours. The most common way to do this is start your own club (or get a position of authority in a club that is already existing) at college (EX: premedical studies and advice club, MMA club, parkour club, Recycling club, basically anything you like.) and another way is running for class president (if your school has it)

Don’t worry about asking questions, if you don’t know there is no shame in asking.

Thanks a lot for this valuable information. I will surely work on it.
Sure. I will ask more questions if need arise. :D
