Biz-Econ vs Economics

Is the only difference between Biz-Econ and regular Economics that with Biz-Econ, one is required to take accounting classes (which I hear are GPA killers) ? If so, then what is the point of taking Biz-Econ instead of regular Econ if one does not have an appeal to accounting?

Business Economics have slightly different requirements. You have to take two “106 series” classes, which are basically econ classes that actually have practical application, rather than pure theory. This includes classes like Economics for E-Commerce and Technology, Game Theory, Pricing, Design Markets, Investments, and Finance. You also have the option of substituting up to three of your economics electives for accounting courses, if you are a Business Economics major – I’ve found that accounting upper-division classes at UCLA are easier than upper-div econ, but it just depends what you’re personally good at.

Keep in mind that bizecon is very competitive and you’ll need to do really well in your prerequisite classes in order to get into the major. Econ is much easier to get into.

I was also wondering this… Also, is it possible to apply for Business Econ even if you’ve been accepted to the Pre-econ major?

Sure. pre-econ doesn’t really mean much since it is no guarantee of admission to the econ major. Nor is being listed as pre-biz-econ. Since UCLA L&S doesn’t admit frosh by major, all that having pre- listed means its the box you checked on the application to UCLA.

Just take the pre-biz-econ classes on the list at http://www.econ.ucla.edu/undergraduate/majors/bizecon.cfm and then apply. And having your records say pre-biz-econ is just a matter of asking once you are enrolled, maybe you can even do it at orientation.
