My son, who had 12th rotation this quarter and was only able to waitlist classes during his original enrollment appointment, now is officially enrolled in 14 units (all classes that he needs) and is hoping to get one more 2-unit class by crashing the first week. He was not picky with time or day or professor. We watched for new sections opening up all throughout the open enrollment period. He has 8am class 4 days/week and Friday afternoon classes from 1-6pm. We are satisfied. He even ended up with some teachers that are highly rated on polyratings.

@ ralph4 We are both fans of the school, I am proud to have two undergrads up there. I do believe the school has some issues to address and the registration system is one of them. Yes, most of the ~17,000 kids will fill their dance card every quarter but let’s keep it real, after third rotation getting classes can be more than a little shaky. The school has a $250,000,000 annual budget. It is hard for me to believe the registration process in use at SLO today even comes up to the level of performance of the DMV. At least at the DMV we can all make an appointment and expect to have a place in line when the time comes. That is not true for the students at Cal Poly. If you went to the DMV, took the driving test, passed and paid the fee, you would not be a happy camper if you got a ticket two weeks later for an expired drivers license. They deserve better.

I don’t dispute anything you’ve shared, slolearner, and I am no fan of the way California spends our tax money!!! I just haven’t been dissatisfied with Cal Poly’s registration process. I consider it fair, since everyone gets a turn at all 12 priority groups in a 4 year period, and everyone gets the same number of “priorities”. Having had 4 kids attend Cal Poly since 2007, the registration process has never hindered my kids progress toward their degrees yet.

Fair enough ralph4, congratulations on getting 4 kids into Cal Poly, that’s quite an accomplishment.

Thanks, we think it is a great school and a great value compared to other college options!

Yes, good value, and my two love the place. I am always impressed with the kids they bring home to visit, nice, smart kids.

Yes, much to be thankful for! :-)

Spring quarter update: After the first four days of classes, my freshman son who had 12th (last) registration group and couldn’t us a “priority” now has 24 units and plans to drop his 8am history class giving him 20 units. 16 of the units are required for his major, and the other 4 are toward the minor he wants. The registration system isn’t as bad as it seems if you just give it time and are not too picky. From now on, he should not have to register any later than 8th registration group, since he’s already had 12th, and he can use priorities for 9th, 10th, and 11th. Oh, and he’s dropping the two online classes he had enrolled in at a community college just for backup. :-)
