Registration policy

I am junior with a lot of AP classes (9th-2AP, 10th-3AP, 11th-4AP in progress, 12th-4AP plan), so am I going to have any priority with registration if I decided to go to CalPoly?

What is the registration policy? (How to register for classes)

At UC system it is based on your credits? (More credits better time, so I would have the best time as a freshman, more classes to choose)
At SFSU they have priority time so everybody register part time first, they dont count credits.

Hi there, at Cal Poly, it’s a bit more fair. It’s not based on how many credits you have. It’s based on a rotational system based on your last name. There are 12 rotation groups that are randomly generated.

[Registration Rotation Information - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly](<a href=“Welcome to the Office of the Registrar - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo”>http://records.calpoly.edu/registration/gen_reginfo.html)

In my opinion, this system can be pretty stressful if you have a bad rotation number(i.e number 7-8 or higher). Fortunately, you get 3 priority uses.

Ok, it sounds fair that registration is based on a rotation system according to last name, but truthfully it is not. Because it is this way, a lot of seniors are not able to get into classes they need to graduate and are stuck here longer. Yes, you get 3 priorities, but it can be hard to decide when to use them sometimes and they tell you to save at least 2 for your senior year, but sometimes you really need to get into a class your sophomore or junior year in order to not fall behind. Also, I would consider any rotation number after 5 to be bad. Even if you are 2 or 3 chances are at least a few of the more desirable classes have already filled up.

Wow! That is a lot of AP classes. At my son’s HS (which is very highly ranked in the state) they aren’t even allowed to take AP classes until sophomore year and then it is only 2. You have worked hard!
Also, your first quarter, they choose the classes for you basically. All first quarter freshmen are given a block schedule based on your major and the AP classes you have already taken. It helps because you at least get some of the classes you need. Then you can add and change if you want during the open reg time. Of course the real fun begins the next quarter when you have to register based on your rotation number. my son got what he wanted this quarter because he was #1. Next quarter he is 12th!

I do believe that athletes get priority registration. Not sure about anyone else…

Athletes get priority registration during their sport’s season (so football gets it in the fall, baseball in the spring, etc.)

Momofmv,

Number 12 should be fun! My daughter was 11 the first quarter, but at least some of her classes were already blocked for her. And, she added a couple classes without a problem.

2Leashes,
Yes, I think he is planning on a fairly light quarter since he may not have much to choose from. One of his roommates was last this quarter and he was able to get some classes he needed. I told my son that he may not get the times he likes (10:00am or later) It will be interesting! His main concern is that he would like to get the next chem class in his series, so he can take them one after the other.

Thanks for letting me know that it might workout fine. Can you believe we are talking about their 3rd quarter already! Time is flying by…

Hi Momofmv! How is your son liking MATE? My son is about to register for his last quarter of MATE classes! Thankfully he has a pretty good rotation for Spring quarter (since he’s used all his Priorities), so hopefully he will be able to get all the last classes he needs. We are hoping for him to land a job by summer! You are right, time is flying by!

Hi ralph4! Great to hear from you and how exciting for your son! I am sure you are very proud of him. I would love to hear about his final quarter and job search.

My son is really enjoying his MATE class and they are working on the first project (the solar water heater) He likes his group and of course the fact that it is a class without all of the tests! He is doing well in his classes and is really enjoying Cal Poly and SLO. I can’t believe that it was a year ago this coming Friday that he was accepted! We are so glad that he chose CPSLO as his school.
Any advice from a senior MATE or his parent would be much appreciated!
