Fall Class Registration for Freshmen

When does it begin?

I called the business school adviser today and he said all incoming freshman in each college are going to be “block registered” for 12 units. This is due to budget cuts and classes being dropped over the summer. Then at SOAR they can learn how to register for more credits if they want to. According to this [Registration Rotations Schedule Fall 2009 New Students - Academic Records - Cal Poly](http://www.ess.calpoly.edu/_records/registration/RegistrationRotations2098_newstu.html) registration appointments start on August 18 on a rotating basis depending on the 1st 3 letters of your last name. Then CPREG closes on 8/21.
If you find out differently can you please post on here?
Thanks

I sure will. This budget fiasco and the uncertainty it’s generated has us second guessing our decision.

I agree with you gotpeter. The CA budget crisis is going to throw a wrench on many issues these next coming years. Registration fees have just gone up over $200 for this coming Fall term.

I am just as concerned about reductions in faculty and classes. As it is now it is difficult to graduate in 4 years, particularly in engineering, and it looks like it is going to get much worse. All of a sudden in state public education does not look all that cost effective.

It is actually impossible to graduate in 4 years now. It’s bad enough trying to get ahold of your classes, but now that classes are being reduced, it’ll be even more of a nightmare to get classes.

Registering for classes is about as stressful as mid-terms/finals week for me. I think it is a blessing actually that freshmen are already registered for classes. First of all it avoids the stress of choosing all the right classes…registering for the first time can be confusing ESPECIALLY if you’re an incoming student and have not had experience with it before. Many freshmen sign up for the wrong classes or classes that don’t count toward their major/GE because sometimes the flowcharts/curriculum for certain degrees is not always clearly laid out. I learned the hard way and my first quarter at Cal Poly sucked because I didn’t register properly for all the right classes.

There is also talk that this year is the last year Cal Poly will offer summer school. I do know a lot of summer classes were canceled at the last minute, which really threw a wrench in things because students who were registered in a class for the summer that has since been canceled ruins their Fall Qtr schedule because some summer classes served as a pre-requisite to Fall Classes (for example…a student may have been registered in Physics 141 for the summer, and Engineering Statics in the Fall…and if Physics is canceled, then the student must unenroll in Engineering Statics…which screws everything up because all classes are now full).

The fact that Cal Poly is dedicating so much of its money to the physical renovations of the school (they’re redoing the UU Plaza…knocking down an old building and replacing it with a new one [which will reduce classes EVEN MORE during construction]…renovating the Rec Center) does not help the budget crisis and the fact that students have to suffer the consequences in a very aggravating way.

I’ve had a professor tell me that registering for classes at Cal Poly is the worst he’s seen in any school that he’s been to/taught at. It’s such chaos to get a class and so stressful since classes fill up SO fast. So count it as a blessing that incoming freshmen are already registered for, because now they have a full quarter of Cal Poly life to really learn how to deal with the registration process as opposed to screwing up and signing up for the wrong classes.

While I agree that the CA budget cuts are making things tough, and it will get tougher, I know this is not unique to Cal Poly. All of the CA public colleges are getting hit. My son’s friend chose UC Irvine because the Swim Team recruited him ( he’s very good ). Last week he was informed that UCI was dropping the Swim and Dive program. They were the only NCAA 1-A swim program in Orange County. And as far as registration being chaotic ( and classes being full ), its been that way since I went to college 35 years ago. The best advice is to map out all of your options from the start, and have a plan B ( and C and D etc. ), and be proactive. Come on, college is supposed to be fun!

Cal Poly SLO just blocked all new freshman in fall classes and basically said if you stay on track you graduate in four years…The Provost is pushing the faculty to actually teach the classes necessary to graduate on time.Way to go Provost!
