Hello! I am an african-american female from the metropolitan detroit area. I am interested in attending duke with a major in public policy and I eventually would like to become a lawyer. I am entering into my senior year and duke is pretty much my 1st choice, except maybe unc-chapel hill lol, I currently have a 31 on the ACT. My GPA is a 3.69 unweighted and MUCH MUCH higher weighted, and i also go to a very prestigious all-girls catholic school. I have taken the hardest curriculum possible at my school. I will be a National Achievement Scholar. I have been HEAVILY involved in all aspects of the drama department at my school, and i have over 250 hours of community service for my work with the naacp. I also coach students at a school in the inner-city on their speech skills. Hmmm besides those i have a ton of other leadership positions and extracurriculars and I think I am an amazing writer. Pretty sure my recs will be VERY VERY solid. CHANCE ME, PS should i do early decision?

come on ppl help!

Welcome to Duke.

anyone else?

I'd say that your chances are really good!
Solid EC's and courseload!

I got into Duke with a similar UW GPA and with a Weighted GPA so much higher that it put me at about the top 2-3% of my class.. if you write an excellent essay, I would say that you are in.

The only thing you may want to do is retake the ACT.. if you get a 33 or above.. you will definitely be in Duke!

Good luck next year!

I have taken the act twice and both times I got a 31, I am considering taking it once more to get a 33

If anyone else has an honest opinion or advice I would be more than open to it!

eh Duke? With your connections to the NAACP, if I were the adcoms, I'd say no after what happened to the Duke Lacrosse team as a result of the NAACP's involvement in a very twisted case. Luckily they are all free and the D.A. is facing charges himself. Other then being involved in a harmful, racist organization you are an impressive applicant who stands a decent chance of being admitted to Duke.

lol i agree with the above poster

ConLax, you are my hero

hmm, wow i had no idea that the naacp was racist seeing as how half of its founding members white. However, thanks for your advice, misguided as it may be.

It has since strayed from its roots. The founders are dead, but sadly the naacp is still around being used as a intimidating, hate machine.

...misguided does not apply to anything I said. You seem a bit misguided yourself.

Wowwww I had no idea people who possess such intelligence could also possess such ignorance. Now I will not deny that what happened regarding the naacp and th eduke lacrosse case was wrong but this organization is not an intimindating hate machine. I have seen firsthand the good it does for children living in poverty and violence stricken neighborhoods, and this support is not limited to just black children. The naacp preaches a message of love and acceptance and I do not appreciate your ridicule of an organization that I hold in such high esteem. SOOOO, back to the topic of the thread, my chances at Duke! PS. ConLax11 because I respect your opinion I want to know if you think I should leave my naacp history off of my duke application, and if so should I also leave it off of my unc-ch app as well?

In the early 20th century, the NAACP actually served a purpose, as Black Americans were viewed as subordinates by White America (for the most part), which resulted in persecution, segregation, discrimination, and even violence (the revival of the KKK). The purpose of the NAACP therefore was to level the playing field of Black and White America, or rather to advance African-Americans in society to be viewed as equals. I have great respect for those founders and their achievements in the first half of the 20th century.

However, this is the 21st century. Do you REALLY think founder W.E. Dubois intended for the NAACP to hold annual movie and music awards? Nothing says "respect the Black community as equals" like NAACP members segregating THEMSELVES from society. I have no respect for the NAACP in the 21st century, as it promotes reverse-discrimination and a virtual, unneccesary crutch for Blacks in American society.

That being said, which test should I focus on this summer to imrove my transcript (SAT or ACT?) I want to focus on the stronger of the two (seen here) so I can optimize my chances for ED acceptance. Thanks!

SAT I: 2090 (680 CR, 690 M, 720 W)
SAT II: 800 Math IIC, 780 U.S. History (Duke only takes 2 SAT II right?)

ACT: 31 Composite (34 E, 33 M, 31 R, 27 S)

Honestly, I believe you when you say they do good things in your area. However, I am not ignorant, I know exactly what I am talking about. Nationally, they tend to do some nasty things because of bad leadership. Leave it on your application and describe the work you personally have done with them. It will help you if it on the level of community activism and service. It is a significant part of your extracurricular line up so it will give you an advantage in your in admissions process. It shows dedication to beliefs and your community.

Madboy121- If I were you, I would focus on raising your science ACT score to like 32/33 which would give you a 33 composite on the ACT.

OP:

Re: elevating your test scores, which may be your only "weakness:" in addition to analyzing where you need to do some additional prep for a possible ACT retake, have you considered taking the SAT? As you probably know, some people just do better on one test than they do on the other.

thanks, DukeRose

omg mafool thats a good idea, and yay im excited it says ur from michigan!

I'm from Michigan too! Where are you guys from? I'm from West Bloomfield.
