Ok, so I'll make this short and sweet. I retook my ACT this Feb. and raised my score from an embrassingly 22 to a **27/b. It still sucks but it's all I have.

I'm an African-American female with parents that make less than $30,000/yr. I applied for Trinity with hopes of majoring in Computer Science.

So yeah... I know my chances aren't so good but I still want to give it a try.

its definetly a reach but u have a while to raise your scores and everything, so i wouldn't worry too much if duke is where you are looking. some people are better at the sat so i would try that. if u can pull up your and sat scores u would have a decent chance

its definitely a reach...but i have faith in you....lol...that sounds werid...but...i applied to Duke also, and just got my scores back. I wish u the best.....btw...i just won the comcast leadership thingy too...haha...

hey mika, i have a question. How are you sending in your scores to Duke. I applied there too...but I know its not too late, but are you going to call them or email them. If email, where do you find the email addresses..can't find them anywhere....

I think your chances are pretty good actually. A 27 on the ACT is within the range of matriculating students and nothing to be ashamed of. However, to be blunt, I honestly don't think you will survive a comp sci major at Duke having scored a 23 on the math portion. The majority of comp sci students are great at math, and you'll be required to be great at it to survive the major at Duke. I'd say the vast majority would score 34+ on the ACT math. A 30 would be seen on the lower end of comp sci majors. A 23 is not anywhere near the range. Sorry if that sounds particularly harsh, but it's just from my experience. I don't mean to crush your dream or anything - I just foresee you having a particularly difficult time in comp sci at Duke. It's not for the faint of heart. Luckily, they don't admit you to a major or else I'd think you'd be an automatic reject because of your math score. I think your chances of admission to Pratt, likewise, would not be very good. But I could definitely see you getting into Trinity. Your extracurriculars and activities are impressive. I wouldn't put Who's Who recipient on application as pretty much everybody who applies to Duke gets this and it's seen mostly as a gimmick. If you already did it, it's not a big deal. It won't hurt your application, it just also won't help, so there's no point to put it down. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the advice!! I feel so much better now.

@ahhhhhhhhhh: I called them 2 months ago regarding my Feb. scores and they told me to send it to them through ACT as soon as the scores are available.

@bluedog: I know, but I just suck at math. I tried really hard on the math ACT, but I only managed to raise my prior score from a 22 to a 23. It seems like no matter what I do, math will always be my weakness in life.

As far as the Who's Who thing goes, my school holds a Who's Who ceremony each year for the seniors and awards the top 10% of the class. Maybe I should have reworded it somehow? Oh well, I'm pretty sure it's too late to change that on my resume.

i think u have a great chance as well,
im also applying to duke this year and received the comcast scholarship as well, i wish u the best of luck

wow these responses are quite polar
but I'm going to side with the reach camp.. I think you'll be in the lower end of applicants. It is unusual to be so interested in computer science without mathetmatical talent.

Thanks everyone! I feel slightly better, though I admit, I sometimes wish my ACT score was only 2-3 points higher (argh. Math :( ). I feel utterly stupid for applying to Duke now when I see all these amazing stats from the CCers applying here. It's like, how the heck do I compare with all of you?

Oh well, it's out of my reach now so the only thing I can do is hope for the best.

@JohnC613: When I attended a Computer Science summer program, I completely fell in love with the subject and I knew it was something I wanted to pursue in college. I'm determined to get a degree in that field, no matter what school accepts me. Math is just something I have to tolerate, despite the lack of talent I have in that department. It's not like I hate math, really. It's just that, based on my test score apparently, I suck in it. :/

Mika08: I am so happy for you......You should be so proud of your improvements. Both your GPA and your test scores have increased since ED1, I only wish i had done what you did as far as test prep, Its too late for me now but I just thought i'd stop by and congradulate you. I REALLY think your going to get into Duke (and every where else you may have applied), but what ever happens you've done a great job!!!
