So I was recently admitted to MIT class of 2019, and I am currently leaning towards MIT but there’s one thing holding me back. My sister is a senior at another top 10 college and she had a really great experience there in major part because her school had a great black community, and I was wondering what the black community is like at MIT.
Chocolate City (within New House) has a pretty strong black community, but outside of that, I can’t tell you much. MIT is already quite diverse culturally.
I agree with @MITer94’s comment about MIT already being culturally quite diverse.
Here’s one thought to ponder.
Are you looking for a school with a black community that you can seek out to feel comfortable in?
Or are you looking for a school where you’ll learn to be comfortable in any community your interests draw you to?
@meltahir im having the same problem. I’m hoping my host at CPW can give me insight because after watching a video on YouTube of mit black students saying how they felt on campus, mit has fallen to my #2/3
@Jellybae:
No school is perfect. But MIT is right up there with diverse open minds.
Every freshman comes to school with their own individual and unique apprehensions and insecurities. I am sure that yours are very real to you. Growing out of them is what college is all about.
You can find YouTube videos to reinforce any position you want to believe. Do you want to base such an important life decision on a data point like that?
As I eluded to earlier, some choose schools based on how they’ll reinforce their comfortable shell. I always hate to see that because college (especially MIT) offers so many opportunities to learn to thrive and feel comfortable in any environment life throws at you.
