Black Girls In Here?

I want to know what some of yall do for your hair. I am trying to get it to grow, but it seems to be growing only maybe 1/4 of an inch PER MONTH. Any advice?

not a black girl tho

Any type of braids, except micro-braids will help your hair grow out faster. I'm black..so I do speak from experience

Yeah, that's how my hair is growing! I got it in braids. Not microbraids because my hairline is thinning. Microbraids would make it worse! Do you have that problem?

using chemicals wears down your hair after a while...so pressing your hair w/ a hot comb or flat iron is best

That's just the rate that your hair grows at. Right now there's no way for you to alter that, all you can do is try to minimize the breakage, but I guess you got that covered since your hair is braided. It sucks to hear it, but you can't do anything about it.

used to have that problem back when I was in middle school, and I just gave it up and settled on other braids style. Like cornrows in diffferent styles in only the front of my hair using my natural hair and sometimes with extensions.

Also, perming can be an issue, and the type of perm. The perm could be too strong, or you might not be waiting enough time in between the perms. Six weeks is normally a good time frame to go by.

Instead of using a flat iron or anything like that, use a blowdryer instead...it is much less damaging. Pressing your hair permed or not is not the best way to go, because it literally pulls out your hair.

Don't wash your hair on the week you are going to perm your hair, it causes your head to burn while the perm is on. Wash hair a week before.

Don't take out your braids or any hairstyle, with the exception of twisties, near the time of the perm. Do it a week or 3-4 days ahead of time.

Moisturize your hair. It doesn't have to be every day, but moisturize your hair atleast once a week..but your hair structure might be different, you might need to moisturize more during the week.

Wear a SILF scarf, not a bandana, to bed..it reduces split ends and other hair problems.

Get your hair checked for split ends. DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR OR PERM YOUR HAIR AT A JC PENNY OR ANY DEPARTMENT STORE. Make sure that the person you are cutting has long hair. I don't mean to make a rascist remark...but lots of female black hairstylists will cut your hair, because of split ends..when you might not even have split ends. They will cut it super short, when all they had to do was cut a centimeter off.

The front of my hair started breaking off this year (it wasn't bad, but it still got on my nerves, that my hair wasn't perfectly healthy like it was before)..the reason it started breaking off was because I had not braided it at all during the year ( I was on school's dance team, and we had to do certain hairstyle every week, braids were not allowed). So keep you hair braided atleast a few times during the year.

If you normally get a perm, keep on getting a perm, because lack of doing a perm..could break off your hair. It's like your hair becomes dependent on the perm. If you want to stop perming once and for all..you will have to braid your hair up or weave it up...or else it will also break off.

Everyone's hair is different, so don't be frustrated if some of my tips don't work. But, I know atleast one will have to minimize the breakage.

Okay, I can accept if my hair grows 1/6-1/4 of an inch per month, but my HAIRLINE? Its not growing AT ALL. And its getting pretty bad. Do not one of you have any trouble with your hairline? :(

Why do you say not to take out your braids the day of the perm? What happens?

Ohh man. I go to one of those black salons with all black people inside. They only cut your hair a little bit. They know how precious it is.

I really did not know this. Thanks.

No problem, I like to help out people on stuff that I'm knowledgeable about.

Braids can speed up the process of hair growth...making it grow more than your usual hair growth. If you take out your braids on the day of the perm, your head will feel like it's burning. It makes your head more siensitive, therefore more likely to get to get scalp burns..and some scalp burns just break off your hair...depending on how bad it is. It might be different for you, you might not be affected, but it has happened to lots of people I know and also to myself.
