I'm not at all trying to sound racist and I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way. I have plenty of friends who are white, asian, hispanic, indian, and all backgrounds, I'm just wondering...

What is the african-american life like at UCF?

Are there a lot of black people?
Where do they usually hang out at?
Are there black fraternities/sororities on campus?
Basically anything.
I would just like to know a little bit about black life at UCF so if anybody has any information at all, please share it with me.

Again, this is not intended to be racist or anything, I just want to know.

When I went to visit on Friday and Saturday I saw a good amount here and there. There wern’t a lot of black people but there were more than any other college I’ve visited (except for USF). Thats all the info I can give you, sorry If your looking for a mainly black school you would have the most luck with an HBCU. Most schools besides HBCU’s are predominantly white…

I’ve seen and met a good amount of Black people around here. Not sure about frats or sororities, but I know there are some clubs that are only for African Americans. UCF is pretty diverse, if you ask me.

I go to the Engineering College, and I sure haven’t met any so far here, it’s essentially just me (Although I’m taking online classes this semester so that’s irrelevant XD)

Honestly it seems to go by major of study, at least at the transfer Orientation, when they called us out by Major, every group was almost always composed of mostly one race and a sprinkling of others, although I was too excited waiting to hear my major to pay attention to where everyone else was going.

Thanks everyone! I didnt know there was a black student union either lol. But I’m glad to know UCF is such a diverse place! Now I have another question…Is joining a black frat different than rushing?

The “BSU” here at UCF is called the “African American Student Union” or (AASU) and there is also an African Student Union, Club Creyol, and organizations geared towards female membership and those geared toward male membership as well. MIO is Men of Integrity, BFDC is Black Female Development Circle, and there is also a Brother-to-Brother program here.

To me, there is a significant amount of African Americans here (more than I initially thought there would be), but as stated before, the campus as a whole is pretty diverse. You can find us all over, mainly in the Student Union especially on Wednesday since this is the day when many of the organizations on campus have their meetings and it’s like the unofficial meeting place for every student on campus. Honestly, the campus is huge and not every African American student has the same majors/interests so on mostly every side of the campus you can find a good amount Blacks which is great (dare to be different).

There are 9 (The Divine 9) Historically Black Fraternities and Sororities here on campus, but no sorority/frat houses.

The “Black” Frats & Sororities (NPHC=National Pan-Hellenic Council) do not have an official “rush” process like the other Greek councils such as DGC (Diversified Greek Council), IFC (Interfraternity Council), and PAN (Panhellenic Council) may have. Instread, they have an “intake” process, where you show interest, and if they want to add you to their brotherhood/sisterhood, you begin what would be considered the pledge process.

Yep you pretty much got everything! Thanks a ton!
Im just a lil nervous about meeting and people and everything because I’m coming from Maryland and I wont know anyone in Florida. I dont have family in Florida or anything lol.

Do they take legacies into consideration when they choose if they want to add you to their brotherhood? Cuz my dad pledged Kappa and i know he would kill me if I pledged anything other than that haha

You’ll be fine. It honestly doesn’t take long to meet someone. I didn’t know anyone here at UCF but I’ve gained a lot of connections and a few friends. This is my second semester here as a Transfer Student. You’ll do fine Just put yourself out there, get involved and stay informed with what’s going on around campus. There’s SO many types of clubs/organizations and events for students here and a large variety as well. At the beginning of the semester (Fall & Spring) there’s a Welcome Back Event where all of the registered student orgs “Table” and basically tell you about their organizations and when they meet.

Are you coming in the Summer or Fall? If you’re comming in the Summer, I hear it’s pretty slow which is to be expected because it’s the summer lol.

I’m not sure how the legacy consideration goes, but once you get here and get a feel for the organizations you’ll have a better idea of what to expect. Every Frat/Sorority is different.
