There was a thread earlier here that got deleted that said something like "I got a 3.5gpa, little ECs and got into harvard because I'm BLACK. Sucks to be you (especially azn)"...

Is it really true to african americans with said stats could get into harvard?

It's possible... but I doubt it... especially with that attitude.

Probably only if they were homeless or their parents had donated millions.

I'm sure the post was deleted because the person was a troll.

let's be honest -- we all have read enough posts to know that if a legitimate person was URM with a 3.5 GPA and great test scores but poor EC's they could indeed be admitted to top schools. You would have to know the context, but I don't see why not.

some circumstances that might make a difference -- had to work full-time while attending school to support the family, significant portion of school time homeless, very difficult school (with ranking to prove it), frequent moves, health problems of self or family member, death in the family, etc.

I am not saying that the previous poster was not a troll (I can't believe that someone with that type of attitude would be admitted no matter what he claims) but that if it was a legitimate student, there are certainly possibilities for an admittance to Harvard.

that guy was || source ||

Don't let him deceive you, blacks don't get that much of an advantage. Not from a 3.5

Dude, there are people with 3.5s that get into Harvard...

Of course there are, but a black person with a 3.5 is not likely to have so much of an advantage that they get in on that.

There are probably some white people that get into H with a 3.5 too. Just because you don't personally know anyone with stats like that, does not mean it can't happen.

You should rename your thread, its ignorant. Not all "black people" are african american. Dumbass.

yes, as it is possible for some white folks, some asians, some girls, some boys....

why do you ask?

I doubt that poster was actually black. From the addition on the end, my money would be that the poster was Asian.

If people want to cry and get upset about people with lower stats being admitted, talk about the merit of athletic recruiting.

JESUSSSIIEDGUYIDWUY THIS WILL GO ON FOREVER

an applicant isn't going to get into a top school unless they are outstanding in some way. amazing athlete? sure. amazing pianist? sure. amazing student? sure. decent student who has come over more to just get a b than the average upper middle class white kid has ever done to get an a (crappy public school, unsupportive parents, racial discrimination, lack of resources) and is thus amazing, given the circumstances? sure.

emphasis on the magnitude of "amazing"

Well it is possible for an Asian to get into Harvard with a 3.5 nothing is impossible, but it is more likely for the URM or the black person.

One my best friends in high school was black and applied to Yale SCEA. He was an IB Diploma candidate, in the top five of the class (people, not percent), good test scores, president of several clubs, National Achievement Scholar, summer internship with an active Yale alum, etc. He was flat out rejected, although he did get into JHU. He went to Boston U on a full scholarship.

Ivies have the pick of the litter, URM or otherwise. They have no obligation to lower their standards.

Very true about the ivies. The ivies attract the best, so they get to pick the best, URM or not.
