Does anyone know about block scheduling?? I'm really confused and my GC is a jerk and never gives me a straight answer. I switched schools after sophomore year. My old school had a regular schedule with 7 classes. The new school breaks the year down to 4 quarters with four classes each, so you could actually take more classes this way. Due to that fact, a lot of the kids in the new school are ahead of me in credits, which in turn affects class rank. By the end of senior year I'll definitely pull out ahead because I'm loading up and most of the other kids in my school slack off that year so I'll catch up. In the meantime though, I don't what to do about the class rank!! Is there anyway to explain that to colleges?? Thanks :)

They’ll see that you switched schools on your transcript, I think. But you might want to try dual enrollment, if you want to try catching up. Or take summer courses.

^^ Hey i had block scheduling in hschool, and it sucks, sorta. U probably won’t be able to take many AP classes, but here’s the good news. Colleges UNDERSTAND that block scheduling is not conducive to AP suicide, so they don’t expect it! Block scheduling means less classes, less homework, and more sleeping without hurting ur chances too much in college admissions. However, colleges still like to see students with a lot of AP under their belt, but if u pack ur schedule as best u can, u’ll be fine.

O ya, just make sure u write in ur app that ur school has block scheduling and blows. I put it in the attached resume on my common app.

Thanks so much! I feel a lot better now :)

I had 6 classes each of the first 3 years –> 6 AP’s.

I had 8 classes (4 x 4) the last year –> 6 AP’s + 2nd semester relaxation.

If we had stuck with the 6 class schedule I would have been screwed.

our school is weird… they do 7 periods but block schedules too…
its like monday and friday are a 1-7 standard
tuesday is 1,2,4,6
wednesday 1,3,4,5,7
thursday 2,3,5,6,7

i dunno why they choose to do it that way though…

I have ‘days’ in my school. A, B, C, D, E, and F’s. Kinda weird. Freshmen/Sophomore year I had gym E and F days. D day was health and drivers ed (freshmen, sophomore resp.) Lab days were either one or two days out of the schedule. Some days I had an extra free period. And of course semesters changed things up as well.

Anyone else’s school do anything similiar? I don’t even know what kind of scheduling this is …

I have true block scheduling at my hs which is just 4 classes a day and your core classes are a semester and electives are a quarter. I LOVE it and I don’t know if I could handle having all my hard classes all year long. It is great to be able to space them out and not have a million hours of hw per night.

Block scheduling is considered better academically. Ever since my high school switched to block scheduling our MCAS (mass state test) have gone up drastically and many surrounding high schools have switched to it because of us.

Also, I have taken 6 math courses. This is impossible with regular scheduling.

jkaufman-I have the exact same thing at my school. I like it, too. It’s just that it sucks having to catch up to everyone else senior year!! I wish I had been there all four years.

yousername- I will have six math too. I’ll also have 6 science so yea block scheduling is pretty damn cool.

We have two days of “block” scheduling a week, but it doesn’t impact the amount of classes we can take at all :[

I have the “modified block” schedule now. My district is switching from regular block. Which means I get to take 4 AP’s at once. Plus 3 honors. And all the teachers think they deserve to give the most homework. Especially because they only have 1/2 hour to teach.

Enjoy your block schedule! It will make your life a lot easier–even with the rank issues.

We have the block schedule at our school. The year is divided into 2 semesters or 4 quarters. Some classes are full-year and others are half-year which take up 2 semesters and 1 semester, respectively.

There is an “A Day” and a “B Day.” Each has four classes (totaling 8 classes at a time).

I like this schedule a lot. It gives me two nights to do homework for a specific class. One downside, however, is that each class is 1 hour 17 minutes.

^ same, except fridays are all block.

I really like the hw flexibility.

behindthelens - I never heard of modified block. Sounds kinda crazy! A half an hour to teach and 4 APs and 3 honors??? Do you like it or does it suck?

We have exactly the same. I think the two nights for homework is the best advantage, as well as being able to take more classes. Our class length is 90 minutes though, and I love it; I don’t think I could stand a class less than an hour long.

I have the same “A Day” and “B Day” thing too! I love it for the same reasons also! I wouldn’t be able to stand having 7 or 8 classes a day. It would just be too many different things to remember every single day. I love having 2 nights to do homework!!!
