I’m a big blogger and was wondering if this is something I should put on a college application. My blog is very closely related to my intended pre-med major. Do colleges care about this stuff?
Dude totally! Real life experience is one of the coolest things you can get, but I would suggest putting a number to it (I have x followers/pageviews per month)
Cool thanks! My friend told me it was weird to have a blog hah
What do you mean when you say you’re a "big blogger’? If you have a very substantial following, it would be worth highlighting. Otherwise, it’s just a hobby anyone can engage in. If it takes up a lot of your free time, it could be listed as one of your EC’s. I suppose it could also be the subject of an interesting essay. (But it certainly doesn’t count as “real life experience” in any case.)
I have 100-150 subscribers- not much, but I’m hoping that it supports my passion for my major. I also have an internship involving my intended major.
The internship is much more impressive, but I would still include the blog.
@MommaJ I don’t see how it isn’t “real life experience”? Knowing how to use the internet is crucial in today’s world and if your career is centered around writing articles, social media marketing, etc. it could be a very important skill to have.
@Futuremed17 I think it would be a very interesting extracurricular to include in your application as long as you are posting original content (and not just reblogging things like a tumblr, but I assume that’s not what you are talking about). If you could use the experience in a personal statement or supplemental essay about how blogging has helped you discover your passion for your major, I think that could be a very positive addition to your application. Definitely include follower numbers/page views as others have suggested to show admissions officers that this is both meaningful to you and to others. Good luck
