BME at La Tech

I am a future international undergraduate student planning to study Biomedical Engineering. How is the Biomedical Engineering at Louisiana Tech University and would you recommend a better university of not more than 25k?

bump…anyone

Hi, gaggle, sorry didn’t get back to you sooner.

We are Louisiana residents and son wanted to major in biomedical engineering.

We took the obligatory trip up to Tech, the only instate to offer such a major, but we didn’t get to see much of the engineering facilities, as the focus of the open house was the football game that night.

However, it was a nice small school, with lots of school spirit, and what seemed to be a pretty good engineering department. It is on the quarter system, which we were not wanting, and there was constant talk of budget cutbacks, which, of course, is going on everywhere.

Since you mentioned a less than 25K school, you would be hard pressed to find one that offers BME. I don’t know your stats and how financial aid works for internationals, but University of Alabama in Birmingham is another school we looked at, and son really liked, that had biomedical engineering and very good science honors programs. I do believe the school has a lot of funding for research, so you may find a more stable program there. It is a more urban environment and would definitely make travel easier for you coming from international. Ruston, Louisiana, was a six hour drive from our home in New Orleans, and I couldn’t tell you where the nearest major airport would be.

Oh, almost forgot. Another very good, very affordable biomedical engineering school is Mississippi State. Very good engineering school. Not too far from Jackson, so maybe better transportation wise than Tech. But in the middle of nowhere and lacking public transportation as well. We didn’t get to visit, but have many friends and family alumni there.

I believe University of Memphis, another urban college, is now offering an undergrad BME program.

I would apply to these four, as they are probably in your financial reach, and see what kind of research they’re doing to see if there’s anything of interest to you.

Good luck!
