Boarding School Applicants for Entry Year: 2012

India! Wowza! That’s far!

When does school start for you?

hey guys! i’m a chinese international and i’m thinking of applying for repeat sophomore (kind of repeat since i’ll only be 3/4 through sophomore year next fall)… anyway, i was wondering, how did you guys approach the subject of boarding school with your parents?

@vmiller, sorry I though that these schools already included safeties but if you have a great public high school in your area I think safeties are not necessary

I just had to text them and talk about it at home.

blehjoints - I started requesting catalogs, and when the first one came, my mom said, “What’s this?” That’s how the conversation got started, and at first she said that there was no chance of me applying. I think she thought it was just a phase I was going through. However, I started requesting more and more catalogs, ordered SSAT prep books, and created an account on here, and then she realized that I was serious. She’s read through a few of the catalogs, but mostly, she doesn’t really know anything about bs. Hopefully when I start visiting, she’ll see why I want to go so badly!

@ballerina22-What schools are you applying to? My parents weren’t so sure of the idea of sending me away to BS at first, but when we visited the first school and saw the campus and facilities, they were hooked. And that, is why it is very important to visit.

I’ve been switching around my application list a lot, but right now, this is what it is:
Deerfield
Lawrenceville
St. George’s
Middlesex
Loomis Chaffee
Williston Northampton

and maybe Groton or Hotchkiss. What schools are you applying to?

I’m not applying-I’m actually going to be a 3rd former at Choate. Is anyone applying there this fall? (BTW, you picked a very fine choice of schools, and I am sure they will impress your parents.)

I hope so! I’ve been looking at Choate, and I requested info a few days ago so maybe when it comes I will want to apply there too. What made you decide to go to Choate?

topsecret I am not very pleased with the public schools we have where we live. I feel I am not challenged enough. I moved from the east coast so I have something to compare to. There is a private school out here but the commute is not worth it for me (1hr commute) & most imp I want to have the BS experience . If I do not make it into any of the schools out here I will also be applying to Woodstock in India. Its a fine school, ranked #7 amongst the international BS’s. They follow the American system. It’s sad I have put Woodstock as my back up only because of the distance. But if I get in there it will not be less to any of the other schools I am applying to out here. I will be going there sometime in Nov for my interview. Will keep you guys posted.

I’m applying to boarding school abroad as well! I’m very excited. My school system is also not that challenging or interesting to me. There aren’t enough options.

I’m reapplying this year and I’m really excited like some of the other people on this thread. I’m so excited today to schedule my ssat’s, even though the test isn’t that fun!!

@vanillacream, could you tell us about your last application? Which school did you apply? Did you apply for aid? Do you know why you were rejected?
sorry for asking too many questions, I’m very nervous right now and I need a lot of experience from others.

@vanillacream, what grade did you apply for and what schools?

I applied to 2 Hades schools and a Gladchemms for 9th grade and was waitlisted at all 3. I don’t want to share names because I’m applying to two of those schools again. I did apply for aid and I think that was a contributing factor to my admissions decision. I also think it was just a matter of too many applicants, too few few spots. That’s why this year I’m going to try to set myself apart with a new extracurricular. Also, I didn’t really contact faculty members that taught in my interests. I’m going to try to do that this year and send a sample of me playing my instrument so that they know I can actually play.

I saw that a bunch of you were talking about dslr cameras. I recently got one, a canon rebel xs. The Canon Rebels are really nice and they come in different models with different features in different price points from the xs (cheapest) to the t3i (most expensive).

@ballerina22-I hope you do! Anyways, to answer that question you asked me long ago…truth be told, me being accepted into Choate is quite a long story. But what made Choate one of my favorite schools that I applied to is the economics program (which is quite strong), as well as an opportunity to really improve on my arts (I’m a musical sort), and the friendliness of most of the students. When I toured Choate, my tour guides were not only nice, but they were extremely warm and friendly, and I felt like I could belong there. Well…this is quite a long post for me. >.< Good luck to you, and everyone else this year!

Did you have a hook @circlemidnight? I don’t really have one - except for a year of tennis, now going to be continued in the fall - and I don’t think I have much of a chance for Choate. Nevertheless, it seems like a great school - I’m considering it!

hmm do you think i could send examples of my photography to schools?
