Boarding School Applicants for Entry Year: 2012

I’m re-applying to episcopal, miss porters, st Andrews DE, Middlesex, pomfret, kent and maybe Stevenson or Suffield for the 10th grade! Haha…I’m not sure I’m ready for another year of applying but I’m excited for the possibility of leaving my school!

Yeah this year I’m scheduling interviews SUPER early so that I can get in on Sarurdays or days I don’t have school.

@Invent Do you know of any other schools that you can request an application fee waiver from if your applying for FA?

Ehphant: Ha! I’m applying to Stevenson too. If I get accepted with some others though I probably won’t go there because I already live in CA. But it seems gorgeous because it’s practically ON A BEACH!
Almost all my schools are considered safeties for other people, but I’m still worried I won’t get in… Ah!

narwhals…, I heard many schools grant you an application fee waiver if you are applying for FA. Call all the schools you are interested in and the worst they can say is no, but many will say yes.

Hey this is just a quick ranking I did of 8 top boarding schools. I factored in school size(I like 'em small), SSAT scores, SAT scores, College matriculation, and boarding to day ratio.

Groton

SPS

Deerfield

Middlesex(tie)

Exeter

Lawrenceville

Hotchkiss

Choate

Is this your personal ranking for the schools you are going to apply to or a ranking in general?

Okay so I have a bit of a dillema. Apparently, I can only visit one school and I have to do off campus interviews for the others. Idk whether I should visit Deerfield or MX, what would you guys do.

What’s the school you really want to go to and you have the best chance of getting in - in your opinion?

@ rizzledrizzle its just a personal ranking 4 some top schools.

Well i love the small size of MX, but when I think of Deerfield, I think a of a cozy home-like feeling. Which school has the better drama program? That might be a deciding factor.

i think you should visit middlesex, as i don’t think they offer off-campus/skype interviews (not sure, but their website says nothing about them and apparently “interviews are optional, but highly recommended”) while with deerfield, it’s very easy to arrange a Skype interview. my deerfield Skype interview went really well  my interviewer was incredibly nice, haha

also, at the middlesex interview/visit, i believe you’re required to write an essay (PM Izzy busy bee to confirm) so if you don’t visit middlesex how is one supposed to write this essay?
anyway… from my experience, i think you should definitely visit middlesex’s campus and have an interview. i applied to ~10 schools, 2 which i couldn’t arrange an off-campus or Skype interview with (i’m an international), and 2/2 i was rejected, while for the other 8 schools i had interviews at, i was only rejected at 2, so 100% rejection faced with no interview versus 25% rejection WITH interview…

I can feel your pain of only going to one interview…because of the money and all it’s hard. My dad, luckily, is very determined about bringing me to my interviews. It’s good though - we’ll have that father-son bonding time :)

This may be random, but do people do drugs at your middle/high school? Just wondering if it was common or not…

^^ yes

i think it’s pretty common in north america, which is a shame

Do you think there are drugs at BS? If there is, I’d assume it’d be less common, right?

there are drugs at any high school, and i’d say the prevalence would differ from school-to-school… drugs are everywhere :- ( i’d assume drugs at BS would be more concealed, though. not sure if it’s any less common, but i’d hope so

I am definetly applying to Choate! (Go Choate!) lol! I also want to apply to Peddie and Deerfield. Choate has great FA as well!

I might apply to Choate… Good arts there? Two more hours until my packets for BS arrive! (Well…hopefully ;])

If you guys have any questions about the application process feel free to PM me! I went through applications for Andover, Deerfield, Exeter, and Hotchkiss and ultimately decided to attend Deerfield as a freshmen for this upcoming 2011-2012 school year! I’m not going to lie… the process is stressful especially during the holidays because most due dates are early in January(it may seem far but it really isn’t). Study hard for the SSAT! Work hard in class and keep up with your ECs. And if people give you funny looks when you tell them that you’re applying to BS( I got a lot of these), don’t be afraid to explain the benefits and let them assume what they may.

Non athletic PG here. Applying to;
