Boarding school decision for daughter with ADHD

Does anyone have any direct experience, positive of negative with boarding schools, specifically in terms of academic support for ADHD? My daughter is currently in a highly competitive private day school in central NJ. They offer no support and in fact expect a very high level of independence and motivation, bound for the highest colleges/Universities. She did okay there through middle school (mostly Bs), but was overwhelmed in 9th grade. I have been providing the support she needs (organization, quizzing her, providing math problems, writing help etc.) and have concerns that ANY school can provide what I have been doing with her. However, she is very motivated, perhaps naively, to go away to school.

Good Luck!

I would highly recommend St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, VA. It is a small all-girls school that provides excellent support if a girl needs it, and yet offers at the same time a challenging prep school curriculum. They have a study skills course that is offered to all incoming students that is second to none that teaches the girls how to best help themselves learn, and being a small school, they are able to tailor their curriculum to your daughter’s needs and strengths.

You might want to look at Purnell in NJ

I have no experience with learning support in boarding school but I have heard of two schools that provide these supports, New Hampton in NH and West Nottingham Academy in MD partners with Chesapeake Learning center to provide supports for their students.

I second New Hampton. Also: maybe Forman or Vermont Academy.

I have no direct experience with it but have heard that Proctor in NH offers this sort of support.

Look at Proctor…

We were discussing this also on another thread in this forum for student who asked about emotional support. There is some overlap in these two lists so you might want to look there.

There are several excellent boarding schools who offer different levels of support for ADD. A consultant can be a big help for finding the right fit, but some schools I know that offer this support (all very different): Proctor, Choate, Berkshire, Westminster, Brewster, Solebury (in NJ), Storm King (Hudson Valley), Pennington, maybe Blair and Mercersberg? Almost all the websites will offer information about the ADD support they offer and many of these are in NJ/PA. Some charge extra for support but they also tend to have more robust programs. Slightly more supportive day schools in NJ (we are in Northern NJ) include Morristown Beard, Solebury, and Pennington.

@adhdboarding,
I’ve PM’ed you. Not sure if you have enough posts yet to receive PM’s but if you don’t get my message I’d be happy to resend it when you have a sufficient post count.

Solebury is in Pennsylvania (but just across the river, outside of New Hope). Clarifying for the OP and anyone who reads the thread in the future and tries to find info on the school.

Proctor does offer this support. There is a variety of help available from basic study skills to full learning skills for kids with LDs like dyslexia but that is all at a cost on top of regular BS tuition. About 30% of the students take advantage of that extra support. My ADHD kid didn’t need those extra classes (and we couldn’t afford the extra ++) but the experiential nature of Proctor was beneficial in general to her learning style.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
This thread is 2 years old. The OP is long gone, so will not be checking PM’s. Old threads should be used for research only, but should not be resurrected. Closing.
