I was too stupid to cover my legs for my tour–they were bright red when I got back for my interview. The apple cider from the Keurig saved me, but I bet my interviewer made a note about how I wasn’t smart enough to dress for the weather. But definitely don’t forget warmth and traction for the little toesies.

Wear pants, or at least tights. It is cold over on the east coast.

The only interview I was excessively fancy for was Andover and that was my 1st one. I wore a black pencil skirt with a blouse and flats that made me very uncomfortable the entire day. Thank god I learned from that mistake.

Exeter kids are incredibly stylish!

I KNOW! That’ll be the only reason I don’t get in… my fashion sense is that of your grandma.

Hey grandmas can be stylish! Vintage is very “in”.

For those visiting the east coast from other regions, be aware that it has been exceptionally cold in New England this week. I cannot stress enough how important it is to dress warmly if you will be touring a campus and not just going from the parking area into the admissions office for an interview.

hth!

twinsmama: I totally agree with you – clothes are NOT the deciding factor and NO ONE should sweat over what to wear. I can’t even believe I’m commenting on attire again as I think it’s the most ridiculous discussion on CC. Wear clean clothes. Look presentable. Enough.

I think the people who continually comment on the importance of making a good first impression and not dressing below a school’s dress policy, if they have one, are just trying to play it safe. OK, fine. Does anyone who likes to play it safe need to be told what to wear?

I can’t comment on any other school, but Choate does NOT care what you wear to your interview (beyond clean and presentable and will even overlook that if you just came from your Olympic competition or refugee camp). The admissions people are lovely and are NOT judging your attire. They are trying to decide if you will contribute to the fantastic culture and community that is Choate. If they even glance at your clothes, I will guarantee you they are not seeing anything they haven’t seen before. If you are still unsure, you might make an offhand comment like, “I see you are staring; on my planet, we like to wear a patch over our third eye.”
