NOTE: NOBLES is not a boarding school. It has something on the order of 10% boarders.
Jonathan, Here is the prepreview you were requesting. Caution: these numbers shown on this chart are outdated and have not changed in at least 3-4 years. I have updated some of the school which I’ll note here. The info is quite accurate; I have used a number of resources, including Peterson’s Independent school books, Web sites, and current view books ( “04-“05 and “05-“06). In some cases I used 4 year numbers instead of 5 year. In Deerfields case I used 5 year matric numbers with 4 year grad numbers. In this case I took an average of the 4 years to get the 5th year number. In the case of St. Paul’s I had all the ivies with 10 or more matrics. Columbia did not have at least 10 matrics so I assumed 9 matrics for Columbia. It may have been 0 or 1 and as high as 9. I chose 9…. Also note that Nobles is really a day school.

Milton is ranked higher than Andover and Exeter? That definitely wasn't the impression that I got when I visited these schools. Milton seemed like a good private day school, but Andover, Exeter, and SPS seemed to be in a completely different league.

Thanks, prepparent. :)

About Milton, the numbers cannot be disputed. If you mean by different league in terms of endowment or size of the campus, perhaps you have a point but in all other metrics (SAT, acceptance rates, matriculation), they are up there. The fact they are 50% boarding may be an issue to some (it may also skew the data) but friends who have children there could not be happier w/ the school. I had similar initial impression as you but from what I heard and saw, I think Milton is a top notch school. At the end of the day, it rally comes down to the fit so does this ranking really matter? I don't think equally impressive students being reviewed by Yale admissions will pick a student from SPS over lets say, Deerfield, because of this ranking.

My mom has a good friend who is the Dir of Admissions at a good college and has been at another, one on each coast. This guy has guided my brother towards SPS and away from Deerfield. Maybe just his bias, but he claims that SPS produces great students more so than any school he's ever seen. What amazes me is there seems to be so little competitive pressure there, at least compared to Andover.

Tommeister, if you look at old threads you will see that Milton % is currently around 20%. As I mentioned these are older numbers. Remember to try not to put too much emphasis on school matrics.

By the way suze, I have had discussions with 3 families who have kids at both MX and well maybe I will not discuss this after all. This may be better suited for PM.

Milton Academy is a highly rank school. It's prestige is not that of Andover or Exeter, but it does land in the same pool. It has around 50% boarding, I think enough to make it officially a boarding school.

Does anyone have the prepreview stats for Canadian boarding schools or just regular American day schools?

purpoisepal, I have the canadian schools that are ranked in the top 50 worldwide. I'll try and find them and send them off .

purpoisepal, here are the Canadian Schools ranked in the top 50 worldwide.

16 Upper Canada College

22 Bishop Strachan School

26 Havergal

36 Ashbury

37 St. George's

38 Appleby

Thanks!

...I almost went to Bishop Strachan School. I didn't because they have daily morning mass and I'm Jewish. And I didn't want to take Canadian history. Or wear ties.

I'm sorry but I have to say that as a student who goes to a boarding school that can be considered in the top 10; Exeter really is considered the best. #1. Students here know it and even teachers say it. To get a top 3 I'd probably say 1. Exeter
2. Andover
3. Deerfield

Anyway, those are just my thoughts from my experiences. It really is true that how good a school is should be how really be based on how well you feel you fit or feel comfortable in a school.

I applied to Exeter having been told it was #1; as a 9th grader I wasn't yet familiarized with the "what's #1 for you may not be objectively #1" doctrine. So I applied to Exeter, and only to Exeter, without visiting anywhere else. It has worked out decently though, so hey. Many of these "top boarding schools" seem to have quite different characters, so I definitely believe that people should look around a little bit before going somewhere, to find what is best for them. Especially obvious with college apps now on my mind, as a senior.

edit: I don't know if Exeter is #1; what I always say, if someone from Andover is bickering or something like that, is "well I haven't gone to the other schools, so I couldn't say, but I think I like Exeter best -personally- from what little I've seen but other places are certainly sometimes better for other people."

beefcakeman, you certainly have an opinion. It's what makes these threads exciting. Certainly we can all agree that choosing a school should go beyond a ranking.

All of the rankings are somewhat subjective. The schools are very different in a number of ways and you have to find your niche. I chose St. Mark's because (i) it was small and intimate and (ii) I didn't get into Groton (still ****ed)!!! Academically, you will find a very similar experience at any of the traditionally top-tier schools but what will differ is the social/cultural experience. A place like St. Paul's has a good number of New Yorkers (and is, consequently a bit more sophisticated that Milton, for example). Schools like Groton, Hotchkiss, St. Mark's, Middlesex, tend to pick from a more self-selected applicant pool and do not attract the percentage of "non-traditional families" (prep school speak for non-rich) that you might find at a place like Andover, Exeter or even Choate. The latter schools have cast their nets a bit more wider than the former and they can, as a result of their size, absorb a more diverse group of students. A smaller school, like Groton, has to look for a "fit" because every student really counts. My own experience is that I had closer relationships with fellow classmates as well as the faculty as a result of being in a smaller school. In contrast, I went to a large university for college and will go to a big school for grad school. In short, the choice was a good one for me.

this is something really silly that has REALLY got on my nerve this past year... i've been holding it in...

THACHER IS NOT SPELLED AS "THATCHER"

AHHHHHH! OK, done.

Tier One: St. Paul's, Andover, Deerfield, Groton, Milton & Hotchkiss & United World College Tier Two: (listed alphabetically) Cate, Choate, Cranbrook Schools, Lawrenceville, Middlesex, Phillips Exeter, St. Andrew's, St. Georges & Thacher. Surprisingly, Exeter finished fifthteenth and barely made Tier Two. Exeter was rated based on college placements for 2004, 2005 & 2006 - which are posted on their website. Exeter also was the only boarding school with a significant # of unhappy students. St. Paul's, Deerfield & Andover were each rated based on the last six years college placements-- 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2007. St. Paul,s, Deerfield, Andover & Groton were well above the rest of the twenty rated boarding schools.

icy9ff8 -- which UWC? there are multiple locations, buy only one in the US -- and I didn't think the one in the US had such a high college matriculation placement

Rankings are only for matriculations to four year U.S. based colleges and universities from the most elite U.S. boarding schools.
