Conclusion: I’m a new sophomore at Hotchkiss and have had a great experience so far. The school is very organized and, for lack of a better word, classy. We hosted Taft for our Taft day this year, and our head of school made a point to emphasize “cheers not jeers”, and to “greet 'em and beat 'em”.
The academics are very intense and are carried out at a high level. The only reason the academics do not get 5 stars in my mind is that sometimes teachers assume that you have more knowledge from your previous classes than you already do so you just have to go make up some of that work. The teachers do push you academically, but it’s very humane and most teachers are responsive if you have a bad day or they push you too much.
As for the athletics, there’s a lot of varsity priority. However, each team gets uniforms and we had a decent number of games. Also, the school is very open to people trying new sports for the first time, so its nice to have that environment.
I only do performing arts, so I can really only speak to that. My frustration with the arts is that my art is incorporated into the humanities program, so we’re limited to the historical context we’re talking about in history, english, and philosophy/religion. That being said, I’m starting to see the connections we can make between my art and the rest of the humanities program.
I love my dorm. Sometimes it can get rowdy right before check-in, but that’s because people are having fun. Also, we eat well in the dorms.
The faculty are very understanding of the work load we do. I was involved in the fall theatrical production, so many of my teachers approached me and offered me extensions on homework because they knew I had sports practice (about 1 1/2 hours) and then five hours of rehearsal per night for about four nights. Even if the teachers didn’t approach me themselves, they were understanding if I went to talk to them. Also, when I’ve asked for extra help in a class, the teachers will always give me time to meet with them and go over what I need to go over.
My favorite part of Hotchkiss is the diversity of students. We all come from wildly different backgrounds, and I’ve made friends quickly and easily. Everybody is nice to each other, and while there are friend groups, there is no mean cliqueness. Friends are very supportive of each other, and they can be as dependent as family when you’re away from home. Recently, there was a power outage at Hotchkiss from the October storm, so the school allowed students to return home. I’m from the West Coast, so I couldn’t fly back on such short notice, but I was touched by the number of people who offered to take me home with them. Literally, about 8 different people wanted to make sure I got to a home away from campus (I did).
I love Hotchkiss and I’m glad I made the choice to come here. PM me with any more questions.</p>
