there's an ongoing myth/legend/superstition that really top tiered boarding schools (andover, sps, deerfield, etc) that the admissions office USUALLY select ONE student from ONE school. is this true?? cz then it'll be hard for me i guess. i asked admissions, and they said no. i'm not sure!!

what are schools really looking for?? really really smart kids but no social life? really social kids but not as smart as the smart kids named above? ahh HELP

in some way, yes. well they can't exactly pick five from a private school that only has like 30 kids, can they?

in my school's case it's usually one (; but not by grade. we've had a top tier school that has like 80 people per grade accept one kid from two grades, and in one of the grades there's another kid who got accepted last year. but don't expect more than two from your school, i don't know it that well but still :P

I don't think there is any rule of thumb here - I know of one top tier school that took four kids from one school out of one class. Others might not take a kid from a good school for several years. I wouldn't sweat this.

As for your second question, it is kind of the same answer - these schools are looking for a well rounded student body, and sometimes they accomplish this by getting well rounded kids, sometimes they assemble this diversity by having a lot of specialists in different fields. My advice - be yourself and trust the process - these schools are really good at figuring out matches.

We worry about this matter too. My D goes to a small private school and usually just 1 or 2 kids are selected to a top tier school. And often, it is a kid with a sibling already at the school or with some legacy connection.

those of you who have said that top tier schools accepted more than 2 from your school, was it from the same grade, and what school (bs) did they get accepted into?

by the way, I think it's true for international students, right? one from every country...
