Body, Mind, and Health Cornell Summer College

Im a junior in high school and was considering taking the body, mind, health course over the summer. I was wondering if anyone who took it knows about the workload, day-to-day, etc....Im not an A student so the info is really important if I decide to attend. Thanks!

Hi, my daughter did this 3 week program last summer. She is a good student, but not all "A"s. She really liked the class and especially her T.A. They had a mid-term type test roughly in the middle of the 3 weeks, a paper due at the end of two weeks, and then the final. She ended up getting a "B", which she was fine with, although she was hoping for a B+. She said there was a lot of work, especially reading. However, she got one of the books and read most of it on the airplane to Cornell (we are in CA) and I know she was happy she had done that. She also thought it would focus a little more on science, but she thought it was mostly from a sociological perspective. I know she had fun!! If you have anything else specific, let me know and I will ask her.

Ah thats great. Thats what I was wondering actully, are there any big science parts, on the website it doesn't say. I was also wondering what it was like day-to-day, lecture, homework, etc...Thanks!

All I know is that since it's only a 3-week program, you'll have class for a LOT of the day (maybe around 5 hours at least).

got the scoop from my daughter. About 100 students in the class
Lecture with the professor 8am to 10:30am M-F
discussion with your t.a. 10:45 - 12:30 M-F
extra discussion sections on M and W in afternoon
related films on Tues and Thurs afternoons
Friday afternoon was free!
no homework, just reading and papers. 3 books and a lot of articles.
2 page paper due after about a week
4-5 page paper due after 2 1/2 weeks
final on last day of class
(I was wrong before, no midterm)
With the reading, it really helped to have a strong foundation in bio, but for the papers and lecture you did not need it)
Late afternoons my d spent in the library (she really liked studying in the stacks, and liked getting a lot done before heading back to dorm)
Evenings sounded like a lot of fun - watching movies, going into Ithaca sometimes, etc., but you have to be back by 11pm, I think. Lots of ordering food with friends late at night.

Hey! I'm going this summer, and I was wondering: Do parents go along with you? We also live in California, and my mother has decided that it is absolutely necessary that she come with me to drop me off.

?!!

It's definitely not necessary. All of the Californians I knew from summer college flew by themselves (including myself). It'll honestly be a waste of a ticket because there's nothing for parents to do really.
