Bogus Majors

What's up with people posting a major that is not impacted on the application and then changing when transferring? Do UCs realize that this is happening? I'm only stating this, because I'm applying to an major that is not impacted with a definite intention of continuing my studies in this field. I just want to state that it's unfair for others to just apply for a major that's not impacted with few major prerequisites, and then taking all the major prerequisites for Business or Psychology or Political Science in the end and switching to that major once their accepted. I know its happened before, because I've heard stories of people doing it and now I know people now who plan on doing this in the next few years. Anyone else against this act? I know UCs are suppose to frown on this act, but will they? Anyone agree?

I also just want to wish good luck to those with every intention of continuing their interest in studying in their desired fields and hopefully their spot is not taken by others who have no sincere interest at all.

People usually manage to succeed in changing majors to what they want when they try this but it usually isn't worth it.

It requires that they have good grades anyways and can end up costing them an extra year just to get accepted into the major (especially at cal/ucla/ucsd). Once they transfer they have to petition to join the other major and that can be quite the doozy.

In my opinion, it's not really worth it, but some people are obsessed with getting into particular schools, even if it means more headaches in the long run. To each his/her own.

i'm not so sure that would work though...

I heard its hard to switch from an non-impacted major to an impacted one.

I'm pretty sure you can't switch your major to economics (and its variants) or psychology after being admitted.

I've read in these forums that Berkeley accepts you by school, then you reapply as your major. If this is so, people could just say they'll take some courses for spring at their community college and instead take all or most of their prereqs then reapply as a different major. If you don't think this happens, then check older posts where people asked about doing this. Also, I see that people have been asking to hide old transcripts or grades. I don't know if the UCs check up to see if people didn't report past records, but i hope they do because it would seem unfair to just hide your record until admission. Anyone can shed some light on these issues?

i don't think you can switch into impacted majors.. you have to be accepted into them

Yeah, competitive majors are usually wise to this. Berkeley makes it pretty clear they won't let transfer students switch into the college of Engineering from outside majors.
