I have been doing some research on the UCB website but am yet to find a clear answer to my questions...Does anyone know how easy or impossible it would be to change majors at Berkeley once admitted, specifically INTO political science. I was admitted as a Legal Studies major (L&S) but I'm really more passionate about political science (also L&S). Thanks guys!

I thought you just get admitted to the L&S college? It doesn’t say anything about the specific major I asked for on my page.

@underbear True, mine is the same way. Maybe someone on here can clarify whether we can declare ANY major in our college (L&S) as long as we have completed the pre-reqs? Maybe the all knowing @Cayton will know : ]

Get in touch with the department. Most likely they’ll tell you that you have to let them know you intend on switching at CalSO.

And good choice on switching to Poli Sci see you in the classes! lol

I’ve consistently heard that switching majors in Berkeley’s college of letters and science is pretty easy. I don’t know if it’s true, but political science at Berkeley is definitely not impacted, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to switch into it. Good luck!

@ocnative Thanks! And I will definitely be seeing you in classes at Berk…are you going to the SoCal reception in Costa Mesa? I’m from LA so that’s the one I’m leaning towards going instead of driving all the way down to SD. Also, what are you planning on doing for housing?

@Cayton Thanks, same to you. Not going to lie, I would trade me admission to Berk for a UCLA one in a heartbeat simply for the fact that UCLA works better for my life situation right now. I’m going to have to put my life on hold for 2 years to go to Berkeley and study…or just settle for staying in SoCal and going to UCI : /.

I think you just declare your major at orientation (CalSo) so you should be ok. I was admitted into L&S and all you need to declare poli sci is 2 classes from either American, international, comparative, etc.

I want to change mine too, but if it’s hard to change it then I’ll go to UCLA

So I emailed one of the Poli Sci Undergrad Advisors and received a very clear and nice response. Basically she confirmed what I thought. You are accepted into your college (L&S, Haas…etc) and from there you are able to declare any major within that college you want SO LONG AS, it is not impacted and you will have completed the prereqs for declaring that major.
