How many Bonner Scholars get accepted each year? If I applied ED do I still need to apply through the separate application? Any tips for the application?

Hi csprings,

I’m a junior and a Bonner Scholar and I just started a similar discussion topic on the class of 2014 facebook group: [Richmond Class of 2014 Discussions | Facebook](http://www.facebook.com/board.php?uid=199203887548)

Here is what I posted, but let me know if you have any other questions!

Bonner Scholars perform 10 hours of community service each week and receive this financial support:

$2500 for four years, disbursed to student via three checks each semester
Two $1500 summer stipends for two summers of service
$1000 in living stipend each summer for two summers
$2000 toward postgraduate loan reduction

As a Bonner Scholar, I volunteer at the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for 6 hours each week, and for the other 4 hours I complete “training & enrichment.” This can be anything from watching movies at the International Film Series, attending lectures, Bonner dinners or Bonner monthly meetings!

Last summer, I used my living stipend to travel to Ecuador and do service on the coast for 8 weeks! I got to do amazing things like harvesting shrimp, constructing a playground out of bamboo, and making my own chocolate (pictures: [Ecuador - a set on Flickr](http://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/marymaier/sets/72157621588336743/)) but I also improved my Spanish and fell in love with my community. This summer I’m planning to go back to Ecuador and do research.

The Bonner Scholars program opens up a ton of opportunities, and there are many different “sites” where you can do your service both on campus or in the City of Richmond, depending on your interests. (And if you don’t have a car, we have a shuttle that can take you!)

If you are interested, you don’t have to have an extensive background of volunteer work, either! The application is due Feb 15 and you can apply online: [University of Richmond: Bonner Center for Civic Engagement](http://engage.richmond.edu/programs/bonner/apply.html)

To answer your question, 25 Bonner Scholars will be accepted from the incoming freshman class (we have 100 Bonners total). I’m not sure about applying ED but you would still need to complete the same application that is available here: [University of Richmond: Bonner Center for Civic Engagement](http://engage.richmond.edu/programs/bonner/apply.html) by Feb 15. For the application, I would encourage you to emphasize the quality of your service experiences (what you learned, accomplished, how you grew personally, etc) rather than the quantity.

I hope that helps!

:) Mary

Mary, your post really helped a lot!
but I was definitely freak out by the numerous essays topics-----I think it’s harder than most college applications I’ve summitted as never had I made so many essays. Especially I started to write them 3 days before the deadline.
I applied under RD (EDII at first but they translated me into RD as I asked for Financial Aid—international applicant!)
Heartily wish they also accept no-USers as Bonner Scholar Community

boner scholar. LOL!
