How do you get this award? Do you apply for it yourself or does someone from your school have to nominate you? Please share

In high school one day I was just notified out of the blue that I had been nominated by my teachers for a book award. The next step was filling out an application (listing extra-curricular activies, volunteer work, etc.) and the faculty decided who got what book award. My little sister received a book award at a different high school than mine and the process was pretty much the same.

In my high school outstanding juniors got book awards. The process happened pretty much without their knowledge or actions. I guess the faculty did it. Which book award people got seemed to be based on relative prestige of the school vs. their academic standing.

Usually high schools give book awards to denote student who are in the top 10% of their class. This is a good nod particularly if the high school does not rank their students.

The high school faculty choose the students based on academic prowess and ECs. Book awards are not honors to which students can apply.

I happen to be the chair of the Wellesley book award program for our metro area for the past 10 years.

Mizo, is it more the hs or college that is involved in the process? what does it mean for admissions, if anything?

It totally the High School involved in choosing the book award. The college only provides the book and forwards the students name onto the office of admissions as a possible candidate who should receive information beginning the summer after junior year. The award is only for juniors.

thanks Mizo, very informative.

This year, my sister received a nomination for the Wellesley Book Award, as did all the top ten girls in her class. Last year, the faculty didn't send out dominations beforehand, but chose and announced the winner out of the blue. I guess every school is different.

You know, I never actually heard of a book award before I came to CC.

What is a book award anyway?

So, considering that the criteria for the award are set by the college, might my daughter having won the award at her school influence Wellesley admission any more than some other award? Probably no way to know, but it is what got her interested in Wellesley in the first place. We can always hope there's some karma in play here!

Well, the book award must be good for something; my daughter got her "likely" letter today. Now let's see if they can make it affordable!
