Hi everyone.
I just received the Wellesley Book Award from my high school last night. Does anyone know the significance of this award, does it make it easier to get into Wellesley, or do I qualify for financial aid at Wellesley? If you know anything, that would be great.

The general conception is that _____ Book Awards don’t help admissions to that particular college any easier.

Book awards do not help with admissions to that particular school. It’s just another achievement that you can have on your college application. Financial aid is based on the financial need of your family.

Ok, thanks a lot for the information!

Some book awards come with application fee waivers for their schools, but that’s about it.

Do come check out Wellesley, though!

My daughter also received the Wellesley Book Award last year and that’s how we came to know about Wellesley. She is now very happy at Wellesley, she is back home now just completing her first year.
Yeah, as Wendy said, do check out Wellesley, it is an awesome college.
BTW, the award sort of helps, esp. during your interviews with Alum

-D’s dad

I have never heard of book awards, what are they?

Largely a recruiting device from what I can tell. My daughter received a Wellesley Book Award this year. Here’s the riff from Wellesley:

“The Wellesley Book Award honors young women who have been top scholars in high school as well as talented performers in extracurricular areas. The Book Award Program recognizes young women who have excelled and gives them the opportunity to become better acquainted with Wellesley.”

As I understand it, the book award is provided by the Alumnae Association. Books are given by local alumnae groups to select schools in their area. Each school determines how it wants to make a selection for the award. Some schools actually have competitions. In some cases, administration and faculty decide based on their own criteria. Several colleges/universities do this, including Yale and Harvard.

You do get an actual book:

“The Alumnae Association is pleased to offer The Norton Book of Women’s Lives, a collection of twentieth century literature of women’s lives–autobiographies, journals, memoirs–a celebration of life itself.”

I haven’t actually seen it yet, although my daughter may have it stashed in her room.

No money or application preference attached, although I suppose it is one more achievement award that can be listed in an application to differentiate the recipient from other equally deserving applicants.

Hey, I got the book award my junior year and now I’ll be going to Wellesley next year.
I don’t know how it affect the admissions process, but:

1) It got me more interested in Wellesley

2) When I had an interview, I told them that I got interested in Wellesley through the book award and they were pretty impressed by that and made a note of it. So…

Well, it’s safe to say that we will be looking at Wellesley, although it was already on the radar before the book award. The book has shown up and is being perused.
