Today I recieved a book award from St. Micheal's College for Outstanding Community Service and Academics. Not such a great school/never heard of it when some others got from top schools like Harvard, Yale, Cornell, etc... Does it still look good even though it isn't from a good school? If you get one from a good school, does it automatically mean special consideration or something?

they don't really mean anything in the long run. no worries.

Some schools will waive application fees or offer special consideration for scholarships for students who are given their school's book award as a junior. Do include it on your applications though since it is an indication that you were singled out at your high school for special notice.

hey i got that award too.

They're given out by alumni clubs. Alumni clubs are not the admissions committees. Weight their importance accordingly.

And generally it's the faculty who do the choosing. From what I've seen, although most kids who achieve these awards deserve them, many times the kids who have already achieved some high recognition outside of school (demonstrating their great work ethic and such) are the kids who DON'T receive the book awards. It's not a big deal.

The alumni clubs aren't doing the picking: the high schools select the winners, based on criteria specified by the alumni clubs.

I got the UVA Book Award!! I sure do hope it counts for something cuz colleges are expensive these days.
