I'm Using Musical Theatre Anthology For Teens by Hal Leonard, Is this a good book to use? I heard that usually these songs are overdone.

Honestly, just sing what shows you off the best and you feel the most comfortable and confident with. In the world of college auditions, I donât think it is as frowned upon to do something âoverdoneâ. I have never heard of anyone having a successful singing audition but then not be under consideration simply because the monitors had heard that sing a lot. As long as you avoid shows currently on Broadway, you should be safe. Especially with your pre-1965 piece, popularly done songs are classics for a good reason.

Check out the websites of the schools youâre applying to as they may have a list of songs that are overdone. I certainly wouldnât sing a song that is listed there as they may think that you didnât do your homework and research their school. Either that, or it may give the impression that youâre thumbing your nose at their suggestions.

As others have said, always carefully check each schoolâs audition requirements and follow all the requirements. They may or may not give âdo not doâ lists. CCM has a good generalized summary of âdoâs and donâtsâ:

[The Doâs & Donâts, University of Cincinnati](http://ccm.uc.edu/theatre/musical_theatre/auditions1/dos_and_donts.html)

I am not an expert, but IMHO generalized âOverdoneâ lists with like 200 songs on them are, âOverdone.â I like this quote from the Otterbein BFA Audition Guidelines.

Otterbeinâs Audition Guidelines have some very solid advice - if you have not read them, you should read them:

Of course, it never hurts to put in the time and energy to find a song that works well for you that is off-the-beaten path.
