Hi guys! I am auditioning for quite a few musical theatre programs in the winter, and am still looking for good songs to sing. Is Another Life from Bridges of Madison County too overdone/ not age appropriate? Any suggestions for good songs that are not overdone? I am a legit soprano but can belt to a D and have a pretty low range. Thanks!!
As Marian is a divorcee (and Whitney Bashor is/was in her early 30’s I believe), it would likely be a tad out of your age range, unless you are a much older auditionee. The rule of thumb is to sing songs from parts that you can play now. There are many “Do Not Sing” lists out there you can investigate, though some people believe there are no “overdone” songs if you can truly make it your own and kill it. Check with individuals schools though, as some DO have specific lists of songs they do not want to hear.
As @stagedoormama says, some schools have specific Do Not Sing lists so be sure and check the website of every school you will audition for. As for the others, and I have said this before, it is OK to do an “overdone” song, but if you do, you had better knock it out of the park because you WILL be compared to the Broadway star that is associated with the song i.e. -“Astonishing” and Sutton Foster, “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and Barbra Streisand, etc… So if you’re gonna sing it, you better slay it.
