Books, Books, Books

I just signed up to have the books for my courses reserved, but I was just reminded by my sister that I could get them from other students for cheaper and that some courses wouldn't even use the books. I can return the books, but it usually won't be before I can decide whether or not I need them.

To the current students, can you tell us which freshmen courses we won't really be needing books for?

i dunno the classes that you're taking. but for those that required readers, a lot of times you won't need all the articles in there so just photocopy the ones you will read or write papers on. i even had one prof who told the class it would be 50% cheaper to go to kinkos and copy the entire reader.

no worries, as long as you return the books by the end of the 2nd week of the quarter, you will get a full refund from the bookstore. by then, i'm sure you can come across a student who is willing to sell it cheaper...

I say don't get the books until you're sure you're going to need them.

However, you can 100 percent get them for cheaper in other places.

I agree with serenegirl. Find a friend in a class and photocopy the reader. I bought a reader for 20 bucks, and it was only 30 pages... Thats like, a 3 buck photocopy job...

I always bought my books online... I have gotten some new books for really cheap from Amazon (like 40 and below). If I ended up not using it or dropping a class or something, I would sell it on amazon... I made a profit on some books that way, haha.

so...since we've enrolled in our classes, should we order the books online now? or should we wait?

just to add, is TRS any good? or is it more expensive to use it?

It's always more expensive if you buy from the school (TRS). Just buy online or from other students once you get on campus.

Is there a popular venue to buy/sell textbooks other than craigslist?

half.com .

I only need one book from the bookstore. Can I still use TRS to do that?

On a similar note to oneday's question, are we required to buy all the books we reserved?

I think you can return the reserved books you don't need after you pick them up. The book reservation site says that there is a two week return pollicy at the bookstore.

I really have no idea why someone would buy from the student store.

^ actually, the used book for chem6ah is cheapest at ucsd bookstore ($133 something). Amazon sells it for $140 something, half.com for 160ish.

adzuki - thanks, i know you can return, but it's just such a hassel.....

wait..i have a question...if we wait until we start school and then order books online such as amazon, do the books come in time? don't they take as much as two weeks to arrive?

if you buy from other buyers, they are supposed to ship within two days of your order date (or else you can give them negative feedbacks). With that said, the time it takes for you to get books from amazon depends on the location of the sender. Amazon.com usually ships within 3 days for most things, 3-6 weeks for others.

Depends what kind of shipping service you pay for. And it depends on whether or not you bought it from Amazon.com itself or the people who post listings on Amazon.com.

There isn't a particular place on campus with something like a bulletin board where people post for sales and want to buy's? Seems like there should.

For those of you that order your books from TRS, did you received an email saying that you must deposit $500 by Aug. 23rd if you charge the books to your tritonlink account.

I didnt deposit $500 yet because I just received the email on the 25th.

Would my order be cancel or should I just deposit the $500 even though I missed the deadline.
