books for Chem 20A with scerri

Hi. I recently enrolled in my classes at orientation: Math 32A, Chem 20A, and a general ed class ( ethnomusicology 50a) . I never had AP chem in high school and did not really pay attention in my 10th grade chemistry class. So I was wondering which books do I need for Chem 20a with Scerri so I can review some material beforehand to do better in the class. I heard his course reader is essential but what is the textbook I need to purchase along with this course reader? Thank you so much for all your help.

[UCLA Store - Textbooks](Textbooks | UCLA Store)

enter your information here and it’ll tell you about all of the mandatory/optional books you’ll need. You can find them on amazon/postyourbook/whatever for cheaper.

he has a course reader which you buy at the course reader store on Broxton. It was about 80 dollars when i bought mine two years ago. Don’t bother buying the textbook. you don’t need it

That’s complete crap, reading the textbook helps you actually learn chemistry thoroughly as opposed to trying to pass by the class for just another grade. Buy the textbook, even if you’re cheap. Taking the class right now, we’re using the Modern Principles of Chemistry 7th Ed. by Oxtoby, but I don’t know what book you’ll use. Check myucla, and watch out for when the class shows a textbook.
Self Study
-Conversion between grams, moles, atoms
-Stoichiometry
-Ionization, Electron Affinity,Electronegativity trends
-Bonds -> Formal Charge, Expanded Octets, and even the VSEPR models
knowing all this on day one will give you a huge head start.

Hey,

I have Scerri for Chemistry 20A but when I put in my info on the UCLA textbook website, his books dont come up. With that in mind, can anyone be so kind as to post his books for me? Required/Optional.

Thanks in advance :)

Guys what’s a course reader? And is there a link to where I can buy it?

Course reader is basically another book the professor created or compiled from other resources. You can buy it at the coursereader store, and sometimes ucla store. your professor will tell you which. I dont know of a link haha. it really depends on the class.

hey thanks for your insight. do you think the 6th edition of the same book will suffice ( it’ll be 100 dollars cheaper than the 7th ) or is the 7th edition essential to understanding the material?

6th and 7th edition of my book are like completely different. International version is pretty much the same, but then its a paper copy. And the bundle w/ OWL and SSM ends up being cheaper than buying everything separately. Just sayin’

okay thanks. so how would I acquire all of them together - the bundle - to make it cheaper? through the website?

New email from Scerri:

Only one of the books is REQUIRED, the Course Reader. This can only be purchased from UCLA bookstore but is not ready yet.

The other 2 are optional and can be bought on-line.

As I said before for the optional textbook (Oxtoby) any edition, within reason, will do. I am trying to reduce costs by not insisting on a recent edition such as the 7th. And again, the textbook is not absolutely essential since there are several copies on reserve in the library and we do not follow this book closely.

hope this helps.
