Books.. for enjoyment?

It’s post-APs, and I want to start reading books again. In middle school, I used to love reading Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, etc. Now I’m a junior, and I want to read books of the same style but at a high level. I’m an AP Lang student. I really really want to enjoy some new books, but I have no idea what books would fit my interests.
Sorry for the vague description.

Thanks!

Watership Down should appeal to you. If you like imaginative adventures and are open to a genre shift, try Flatland by Abbott.

Can’t go wrong with some good Tom Clancy books like Rainbow Six, The Bear and the Dragon, or the Hunt for Red October (the old ones, not the new franchised crap they have these days).

As a warning, some of his books do have explicit content with rape, violence and all that stuff (just in case as a warning), since his books revolve around intelligence and military operations.

Enders Game (and those that follow) are sort of in that genre. The historical fiction books like The Other Bolelyn Girl can be pretty riveting. Those are all page turners. DS, who liked those, enjoyed books like The Road.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The Magicians by Lev Grossman

My D18, also a graduate of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, just started reading The Road. She also likes Stephen King.

Fantasy for a language person: can’t go wrong with Tolkien.

If you’re looking fror something more contemporary, have a look at urban fantasy: Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series is well worth checking out - the first book is Storm Front; Ben Aaronovitch and Benedict Jacka have good series set in London with lots of magic. Carrie Vaughn’s Discord’s Apple involves the Greek gods. Also have a look at Megan Whalen Turner’s Thief series. If you’d like something funny try out Terry Pratchett.

Agree with Enders Game. If you want something a little different, I am currently reading A Confederacy of Dunces and loving it.

George Orville’s books, Game of Thrones series, Red Queen series… young adult books like that, maybe Wheel of Time.

Good historical fiction would include Ruta Sepetys’s books, and I’d definitely recommend Rainbow Rowell (author) for romance.

@raventhemage

I agree that the Wheel of Time is a very good series, and it should keep a decent reader occupied for quite a bit of time. I spent my entire summer (the summer before 9th grade) reading it.

King Solomon’s Mines and a lot of other stuff by H.R. Haggard are good

Terry Pratchett!

If you like courtroom drama you can go for John Grisham.
Or sci fi and fantasy then Pierce Brown’s Red Rising trilogy and Sabaa Tahir’s An Ember in the Ashes

The Bartimaeus trilogy (this isn’t a high level but it’s fantasy and written so well)
The Old Man and the Sea
If you haven’t read pride and prejudice yet do yourself a favor
Catch 22

I really loved The Kite Runner and Catcher in the Rye.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng and All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven and Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman. Phenomenal reads, absolutely underrated.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas (young adult going into new adult), A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas (new adult), The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, and The Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare (they’re a whole big thing but they are my favorite series of all time), An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir.

If you don’t want to get into a whole loooong series I highly recommend the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo. You won’t regret it!

can you tell I’m a book nerd?

It sounds cliché and dumb but ITS NOT I SWEAR- the vampire academy series and subsequent spin off series by Richelle Mead. 12 books in total. Absolutely heartwrenching.

Another series you might like is Holly Black’s White Cat/Red Glove/Black Heart.

The Kite Runner, Slaughterhouse Five, and one of my personal favorites “It’s Kind of a Funny Story”
