Books on American colleges

What are the famous and "must get" books with American colleges to help with the college search process and get an idea of how colleges compare with one another. I heard fiske's guide is good? I'm looking to buy 1 or 2 books that are the well known and popular ones for being
a) accurate
b) actually useful (I don't just need a list in alphabetic order lol)

Thanks a lot!

Btw, sorry if this question was already asked.

If you are talking about guidebooks, there are a few you should get.

1) Fiske guide - Straight to the point, no nonsense descriptions on every college imaginable. Very in depth.
2) Insiders’ Guide to the Colleges - Packed with numbers and stats. Paragraphs on the college are only ok.
3) Students’ Guide to Colleges - Top 100 schools only. Questionnaire filled out by three different students on each school.

Could use some help as well:

Yeah I am talking about guidebooks. Thanks for your suggestions! Can anyone who has used these books confirm they are worth it? I’m sure Fiske is good - I keep hearing about it.

My favorite was definitely the 366 Best Colleges by Princeton Review. It has everything you could want.

bump. anyone?

Loren Pope has a couple books, one is Colleges that Change Lives (all liberal arts colleges with grad school acceptance rates and lots of other tidbits) and another one that is helpful with looking at colleges. You may be able to find them at the library; they are not necessarily books you need to keep, but they are helpful when you are starting the process.

I wouldn’t say I’m just starting the process and I’m also not looking at liberal arts universities (although liberal arts colleges within a big univ are ok). Thanks for your suggestions.

anyone else?

Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges. By far and away the most comprehensive. Very accurate. Peterson’s Directory is also good.

Thanks. BTW I am not interested in anything west of the wisconsin/ illinois longitude. And mainly looking at northeast and new england. Thanks!

One more vote for the Fiske guide.
