Some have said that you should buy your books early, and some have told me to wait until you get the syllabus for the class on the first day of school. What are you guys going to do? Any recommendations?

I've already bought my books O_O. If you buy your books early you have time to look for cheaper books than the ones sold at the UCSB bookstore.

yeah i already bought my books too..most of it was chem stuff that was required, so i just bought them early

You guys bought em online right bookstore?

how did you pay? BARC?

yeah online..no they have you pay with a credit card..i'm not sure if you can pay through BARC, but i just paid with a credit card.

did they ship the stuff to your house or do you pick em up at school

you have the option of just reserving them at the bookstore on campus or shipping them to your house.

i had mine shipped.

^what mtomson said..except i chose to pick them up from the school when i get there.

definitely buy them early! They order enough books for the enrolled students. In larger classes, especially the ones frosh are likely to take that are intro classes, people who are on the waiting list (or not even on the waiting list but that think that karma will let them in) will buy the book too. And why not? If you don't mark in it, you can return it for a full refund the 1st 2 weeks. It's win-win; get in and you've got the book, don't get in and you get all your money back. The problem, of course, is that means there aren't enough books left for the students actually enrolled in the class...

So if you wait until classes start, in many of the larger classes the books will sell out. If you're already enrolled, its a hassle to do the homework and read the chapters without the book ;) And if you go the weekend before classes begin, you wait in the HUGE lines because everyone else waited to buy their books too.

Definitely get them in advance!

FYI: cannot pay through BARC

anyone try to get better price by looking for them through like amazon?

how long did it take to ship to your house, anyone who had it shipped?

the ucsb bookstore took 2 days and i had to get a few on amazon for ccs and i still have not received those in the mail and its been a week.

i tried looking on amazon.com and textbooks.com to compare to the ucsb bookstore prices.
i found that the ucsbbookstore's used prices beat BOTH of the other website's used prices by a few bucks.
so basically...ucsb bookstore is the way to go

yeah same here, they were better prices, i had to get some off of amazon though for CCS

Yeah, don't worry so much about the books, except, perhaps for math classes where your homework might come out of the books. Even so, don't worry about ordering them beforehand, they'll have PLENTY in stock for the first week (go early if you want to find any used copies). Many textbooks you'll find you don't need for awhile and therefore can spend the time trying to find cheaper ones online (some of them you can find WAY cheaper, some will be cheaper at the bookstore). You can also ask your professor or TA if the book can or will be put on reserve at the library, where you can usually check it out in 2 hour increments for FREE (this option is great unless you're a procrastinator. The week of finals, you might fight for the copy, but if you get in there earlier, it will be yours and you can often just keep checking it out at the desk and take notes on all the chapters you need).

If you're nervous, buy your books at the bookstore in the first week, and if you've already ordered them, cool, but really, there's no rush at all and they'll have plenty in stock as long as you hit it in the first week of classes.

I got most of my book from amazon though (somehow they were cheaper than the used ones on UCSBstuff.com). But I also ordered a used book from UCSB bookstore 'cause it was like a specially made book just for UCSB, but then I got a new one instead and had to pay the new price, which sucks... but I didn't have other choices anyway. Still, I was pis-s-ed.

One thing about UCSBbookstore is that even if you order a used textbook from them (that may be cheaper than on amazon), it's not guaranteed that you'll get it >.> You may end up getting a new one which could be more expensive than the used one on amazon... lol

Yeah, I knew a lot of people who felt ripped off by ordering through the UCSBstuff thing for the exact reason that nicha89 brought up, which is why if you haven't already, I do suggest just buying them there. Still, used books are never guaranteed, but if you want to try for them, get there before classes even start to scope out the sitch.
