when to buy books?

i heard you shouldn't buy books until after classes start to know if you need them.

math 20b
chem 6a
cse 8a
lihl 115

should i buy the books for these classes before they start (or should i already have them, lol?) or can i go like a week without the books to see if i can share/find cheap prices?

chem 6a NEEDS to be purchased from the bookstore. first time it’s being used. there will be NO used copies available.

i wouldn’t wait a week. and in the grand scheme of things, if you’re already paying $$$ for tuition, jeopardizing your grades by saving a few dollars seems kind of silly.

you really can’t find good prices anymore.

Math 20B one is 95 new w/ free shipping. Only one I think thats not custom.

Hope they don’t run out of Chem 6A books lol

The first thing I do after I get to UCSD: run to the bookstore and buy a Chem 6A book before they’re all sold out. :P

This is actually the first quarter we are using this book so there won’t be used books being offered. You can probably find it cheaper on Amazon, you don’t need an ARIS card for my 6A class and if you need it for 6B/6C you can buy it separately.

Dr. Johnson

I’ve checked Amazon already and the price is like double that of the listed bookstore price.

you should NOT buy the chem 6A textbook (FA10) anywhere than the bookstore. it’s a ucsd custom edition and cannot be found anywhere else.

Well if you’re in johnsons class, she said i can probably get it at amazon. If i can find a cheap one, i probably will.

ok but don’t expect your 6B/6C professors to be ok with the non-ucsd version …

I only need 6A for my major so i’m fine (:

then good luck trying to resell it :)

^What’s wrong with just selling it back online?

oh yeah, forgot that there was a market outside of ucsd. :)

what about for math b? i already bought the book on amazon. but it says the book is “custom” on the ucsd book list… what does custom mean anyway? why cant they just use normal books?

@xxmsp91
Math10B? Or 20B? I’m taking 20B and it says this.

Calculus Early Transcendentals, 9781429210744

if we use the textbook reservation service, can we just use it for one book (like chem 6a) , or do we have to reserve for all the books we need?

hiii people! I emailed the reservation service about whether I could manually reserve only the books I needed (the custom ones I couldn’t find online) and they said that you could e-mail them the list of books you wanted to manually reserve, OR you could buy using this:

[UCSD Bookstore: TxtXpress](http://bookstore.ucsd.edu/books/textbooks/tol.htm)

they just opened this service recently! I find it really convenient. the money is charged to your ucsd account, and you pick up your books at the bookstore : D

Regarding the Chem 6A textbook… why does the book say Vol. 1? Does this mean its only for 6A and there will be a Vol. 2/3 for B/C respectively? The entire book with an ARIS card is $170 online at Amazon ([Amazon.com: Package: Principles of General Chemistry with ARIS Access Card (9780077468484): Martin Silberberg: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Package-Principles-General-Chemistry-Access/dp/0077468481/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_0_0)) so I’m wondering why the UCSD version is so cheap.

@pinkberry

Thanks! Great find!

@Evolver

The version you found online is probably not the version we need, since the book is a UCSD custom edition and astrina said yesterday that this book is a never been used before version.

Another option is eBay. I got one of my textbooks on there for $1.04, plus shipping.
