So I can’t attend orientation but apparently
there’s a way to buy boots via phone. Since
I can’t try them on before I buy them, I just
wanted some advice. Are the boots mostly
the size of your shoe size, or did you guys
size up/down? And do you want a snug fit
or some room?

Last year, I called to get the number (specification number, not the 12 digit government number), then went to a surplus store to try sizes in that style. I eventually ordered my boots on-line. As long as they have not changed them, Belleville 700s are the ones I got.

You want boots that are somewhat loose. Boot socks are a little thicker than normal socks. Remember, boots come in regular, narrow, and wide, so get the right length AND width.

I don't know my boot size nor remember how they were compared to my shoes. Either case, you need to find boots that fit, neither too large or too small. Too small and they will stretch them, but that might be after several days/weeks of misery from cramped feet and other issues. Mine are too big, so I got horrible blisters on my toes, could have been remedied by a second pair of socks though. You want a good grip on your ankle, and support on your foot.

You might want to wait on the boots until April. The AF is in the process of changing from BDUs to ACUs there is a different boot, just make sure which uniform you will be wearing. The chances are on the small side 2011 will get ACUs, but then you spend money and later find out.......

About the ACUs...just my opinion, but I don't think its a high possibility that 2011 will switch even if the AF has switched by then...there's a chance that we may use up our stored BDUs before ordering ACUs. But, I'm not the expert on it.

I thought it was ABUs, not ACUs. ACUs are for Army, (Army Combat Uniforms), and ABUs for Air Force. (Airman Battle Uniform).

I have seen it as both, a couple years ago the tiger stripes (be thankful that fabric was changed) were refer by that acrornym. This was before the Army changed to the current uniform.

It is indeed ABU. Like Guy said, highly doubt 2011 will have anything other than BDUs.

ABUs...ACUs...just a letter difference. :P

Start learning how to shine boots, 2011. I will be mad indeed if you don't have to learn this immensely valuable skill. :)

lol, cant wait. ;)

The ABUs look like GI Joe pajamas.

Just got an e-mail today regarding the April 9-10 orientation. Boots are priced at $98.29 per pair.

I got the same email and it said that you can buy one or two pair of boots, but do we really need two pair of boots? Petko, we need to meet at orientation. Have you accepted your appointment yet?

You bet, see you there.

I'm doing just fine with one pair. However, some people's boots got really messed up at Jack's. You won't know that until after basic though. I would suggest only buying one pair.

I'm going to the same orientation. I signed my appointment on the dotted line last week and it felt great (actually it wasn't a dotted line... more like a box... but you know what I mean). Are we technically government property yet? I can't wait! :)

No need to buy two pair. You can always get another pair once you're here, even in basic.

yes redhead, you're standard issue government property now. Be careful, you get sunburned and you could be charged with destruction of government property. ;)

You have another...um...5 1/2 months before you take the Oath. Enjoy it while it lasts! Believe me, you'll know what I mean when you get here. :P (Totally not trying to put the Academy off in anyway, just being realistic. :) )

Does anyone know what time the orientation ends on Tues.? Going to try & book the 04/09-10 as well.

Thanks!
