bored midshipman candidate

I guess I'll use this as some sort of twisted online journal.

I just got back from blowing off more money on clothes. Old Navy just opened up this week. Me and my friend who is prior enlisted unexpectly just went on a shopping spree there and at TJMaxx. Today's payday of course. Right after liberty was called we headed to the Navy Exchange store then decided we did not want to eat another crappy meal at the galley so we would walk all the way in the rain to Pizza Hut, which is like a 15 minutes walk off of base.

So we walk and luckily Ashley's ex-boyfriend who is in STA-21 upstairs (a very competitive commissioning program) gave us a ride. We had some pizza, then decided to go to Old Navy. I couldn't stop, she couldn't stop. We just got back an hour ago. We got to Gate 1 and showed our IDs. One of the football coaches saw us and gave us a ride back to NAPS. So here I am.

Tomorrow the battalion is going to the Navy/Notre Dame game in New Jersey. It's going to be a looong ride but I got my bag of chocolate raisins in hand. My dress blues got torn somehow, blah. I'm doing so bad in school. I guess you work so hard in high school to go to college, but now that you're in (kinda) you just blow everything off and do the minimum. Don't be like that.

Last week was Parent's Weekend and my mother came. I thought I missed her but now I'm glad I'm far from her. She kept nagging at me the whole time. I hate it. Well I won't be home for Thanksgiving this year. See my dad's not helping me pay for my uniform bill so I have to save up to pay for it myself.

~Emily~ (usunkmyb_ship)

next episode, BEAT IRISH! (hopefully?)

Navy Birthday Ball last Friday. I'm on the far left and that's Senator John McCain of course.
<a href="http://usna.com/NAPS/images/photos/05/october/Kaelberer/images/navyballnaps05mccain_jpg.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://usna.com/NAPS/images/photos/05/october/Kaelberer/images/navyballnaps05mccain_jpg.jpg</a></p>

Love the picture. Sorry if your mom nagged, I am sure she wants to be helpful. Your post will remind me that my son will do just fine without my helpful comments. thanks.

They lost, 41 year streak it is? We got up at 4:45 this morning and boarded the bus at around 6am. It was about a 3-4 hour ride and I loved it. I'm the type that looks out the window and I love the New England fall scenery. We drove by the Coast Guard Academy and New York then got to New Jersey.

When we got there the mids were getting ready to line up for the march on. We immediately searched for our cadres during Indoc. Inside the stadium we watched the Brigade march on taking up the whole football field, very cool. When they were done they sat in the section next to us.

I can say right now midshipmen are wild people. I mean I though the Napsters were crazy during our football games but they for sure take the cake. It was also very awkward for us because we didn't feel like we belong there. Well for one we were told that we were sitting in the mid's section (we weren't) and we almost had to move to the back. The midshipmen also had cowbells and all these cheers we weren't familiar of.

(thought the internet was going to go down soon, joys of being in a military school)
Yeah, our section was more quiet than we usually are. There was this one plebe standing next to me the whole time and he was very locked on. He never clapped or cheered. Strange. We did get him to talk a little though. I got bored and I hated standing up most of the time. Plus I was starving but had no cash on me. After the game we did get to go to the tailgates and have free food. The team really sucked today. The biggest problem was that these guy can't catch the freakin ball. I hope for a better performance against Army.

The Naps battalion is going to visit our respective academies on Wednesday and I can't wait! I've never been to Annapolis before. So now I'm in my room. It's cold. Oh on the bus on our way back I talked to my mother on the phone. Things are better now. It's just she doesn't show her emotion when she's around me but on the phone she's really nice and says how proud she is of me.

So we have only day of liberty tomorrow, which really isn't because we all do our homework at the last minute. Good night.

~Emily~

Next episode, The War Face slacks off

~~~~~~~
THAT'S ANOTHER NAVY FIRST DOWN
..
WOOOOOOOO!
...
1ST DOWN!
USNAreject
Keep in mind that the service academies will NEVER be able to attract the kind of talent on the football field that the civilian universities can. Anyone with hopes to go to the NFL isn't going to take a 5 plus year stopover in the military first. The sports teams in the service academies play with as much heart, stamina, and courage as anyone they compete with (and many times even more of all three). Navy has no reason be be ashamed of their performance. Good luck at NAPS!
Well afternoon that is. My roommate and I got up at 10am (felt so good!). We drove to WalMart and Wendy's. I'm going to spend the rest of the day doing my homework, laundry, sleep?
When you get to college some of the classes assign their homework online. For Chemistry we have Chem Skill Builders. On there it gives you the lesson then practice problems to do. After every question you submit your answer and it's all done for a grade. For Physics we have Web Assign (or Web Assassin as we like to call it). You'll have to do that too at the academy.
It's very cold and windy today. They just recently allowed us to wear civilian clothes on the weekends and I wore a knee length skirt today with a turtleneck. The males have to wear collared polo or button down shirts (tucked in) with no sneakers. Everyone looks different when they're not in uniform.
Oh, the war face story. During indoc I had a cadre for no reason made me do a war face/cry all the time. Now I'm just known for that. Yeah.
Shogun I hear the USNA football team was doing great this year. If they hadn't lost they would have been in the top 25 college football teams? I think that was it. Anyways they were cursed I tell you. They are a very talented group of guys that turn down offers from civilian colleges just to be at the academy.
Look at this article about our guys preparing for next year:
<a href="http://usna.com/NAPS/images/photos/05/october/nytimes/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://usna.com/NAPS/images/photos/05/october/nytimes/index.html</a></p>
If any guy here wants to join the football team prepare to get huge. You'd picture football players to be hunky and handsome but they're all like 6'5 and 290 pounds.
It's about 1pm now. Got some chocolate raisins and combos. Yum.
Just wondering, how is the application process going for all of you?
~Emily~
Next episode, ChemSkillBuilders, Web Assassin, and a D in Math.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday on the bus our chief played Remember the Titans, a football movie. In one scene the white coach says a line that my platoon executive officer (a prior enlisted Marine) thinks is the best line in the whole movie:

"This is football camp, not the Marines."

Cancel ChemSkill Builders, etc..
In my first post I mentioned about Ashley the prior enlisted girl. Well she DORed- she dropped out and is heading back to the fleet. She told me she wanted to leave so badly but I never thought they would let her. So I lost my best friend here. Guess it's something you have to deal with when being in the military, people come and go.

It's very rainy and dull in Newport now. The Californian and Flordia people keep b*tchin that it's cold but just wait till it starts to snow... We had Chem test today which I did not do great in. Yesterday we got our Physics test back and I got a 63%(and my calculator broke in the middle of the test too!), yay!! That's another twisted thing, in high school I'd be upset if I got a B on a test, now all that matters is "passing".

Today the port side of my platoon has duty. We had inspection this morning and I got marked for not shining my shoes. I start quarterdeck watch from 3-5pm so I go straight there after school.

Very excited about the USNA trip tomorrow. I'm assigned to some plebe named Sara. And our teachers still give us homework for the weekend:/

~Emily~

Next episode: M.O.D. is the life for me.

Emily, you sound like you don't like it at NAPS very much. Although, you do sound like you're excited about your trip to the Academy. I won't be visiting until the end of January so I'm hoping everyone can tell me what think when they return. I still have mixed emotions about going to USNA, even with the LOA. My interview at Harvard is Wednesday and I'm getting a little nervous about it.

So sorry to hear your best friend left. That can make a big difference on your attitude, but don't let it get you down. You will have/make many new friends there at NAPs and the Academy.

Passing is good, but good grades are key at USNA, so try to get them up if you can.
Maybe I'll see you next summer.

Anna

I LOVE it here at NAPS. It can't be exciting everyday and school can be stressful. I just tell it like it is. No really, the people here are great and nowhere else can you have a special bond like this. That's why it's sad when someone leaves or when something happens to them, like my other friend had a death in the family when she was here.

Sometimes you just have to let things out, that's why I'm doing this. I've been mostly whining so far, sorry. Just hoping you find some humor in it. Also compared to the midshipmen NAPSters have a lot of free time to waste, hehe. Don't worry, this is going to be a great weekend. Everyone's packing now so I gotta get off soon.

~another rant
My watch is 3-5 AM not pm!!!!!! But I'm MOD-Mate of the Deck. Basically I walk around each platoon bay and then outside of Nimitz Hall to watch out for fires or anything unusual. The first time I had it at night it was very scary walking around outside by myself, but now it's relaxing seeing the ocean, Newport Bridge, and the stars in the sky.

Hope your interview with Harvard goes well Anna. Just to let you know, when I got accepted to NAPS it took me over a month to return the form saying I will accept the offer. It's huge decision to make and so much paperwork. You got two hot options though so you got nothing to lose.
Later!

~Emily~

N.E. - How's The Cow?...

"Sir, she walks, she talks, she’s full of chalk. The lacteal fluid extracted from the female of the bovine species is highly prolific to the (approximate number of glasses of milk remaining in cartons) nth degree."

My English instructor was telling a story he had in plebe summer. Of course all of you know about all these rates you have to memorize, well that's one of them. One day the plebes were allowed to have cake and all of them suffed every bit they could into their stomachs. I guess it was suppose to be laid back event until one of the Firsties goes up to him and asks, "How's the cow?"

Dreadfully he says the line. There will be a carton of milk and you are suppose to guess how many cups it will fill. So he says, "...prolific to the 7th degree." The Firsties takes the carton of milk pours it into 7 cups- there's still some left over so it fills halfway into one more cup. Because he got the answer wrong he has to drink all 8 cups of milk.
He says he's not sure if they still do that since it could be considered hazing. Whatever.

e-mail me
usna_reject@yahoo.com

Hi Emily, will you please tell me what NAPS is?

NAPS is the Naval Academy Preparatory School. It is basically a prep school you may be able to go to if you are not accepted into the naval academy. After one year there it is almost certain (i believe) that you get into the naval academy. Its up in Newport, RI. Hope that helps.
Oh and there is a link to it from the USNA admission's webiste... near the bottom of the page.

Kyleg687, thank you! Actually, I have a relative who graduated from the USNA several years ago, so I'm familiar with it, but I wasn't aware of NAPS. I think it sounds like a great idea.

Emily, My dad is a USNA grad and I asked him "how's the cow" tonight and 55 years later he answered verbatum!!! He had quite a laugh over it. "By the way Do you know Luke McGlook"....another Reef Points adage!

Best of luck at Naps. I am sure it is hard but it will be worth it in the end! I'm enjoying reading your posts!

Juniormom :-)

PS My son heard from his B and G that he has been reviewed and deferred at this point...needs an eye waiver. Any thoughts on what to expect? His stats from the acedemic perspective couldn't be much better. He's weak on the sports side although does participate and needs an eye waiver... Thanks!

gee, i really am adicted to CC

I'm on my plebe's roommate's computer now. OMG I got a tour of the engineering department building and it is SWEET! I'm going to major in aerospace engineering so this is the one place I was eager to see. We went all the way downstairs to see the gigantic wind tunnels and these huge water tanks for the naval architecture classes. Then we went to one area where the satellight control station is. The Naval Academy launched two satellights and they are keeping track of it there. In the next room were several mids in the middle of building more satellights! AHHHHHH I CAN'T WAIT!!! but it kills me to know I'm going to struggle academically.

Yesterday my plebe only had Chemistry class and I was falling asleep. This other Napster was also sleeping but he got caught by the prof. She's like, "Are you sure you want to come here next year?" and he says "Yes, Ma'am." and one plebe in the back of the class was like, "He's gonna fit in well." The classrooms are new and pretty sweet too. Today I went to her roommate's calculus class and also fell asleep. What else, the mid store is huge. One place you do want to spend a lot of time when you visit is the museum.

The pep rallys are a huge deal here. They even had a small fireworks display and a band playing by the dock. Never will you see so much spirit at any other sporting events. Tomorrow's the Navy vs. Rice game. Too easy to make fun of "Rice". One poster in King Hall- "Sir, the noon menu today is RICE!"

It really feels like college now, well it is college duh. I think Newport has a much more prettier view. I'll miss it there, I miss it already. We had a brief and the speaker said that Napsters have a lower graduation percentage than those straight of of high school. Mainly because we're used to getting paid a lot and we have so much more freedom that we can't handle life here. Kinda scares me.

Questions I had about USNA
Issue- Women
Girls, if you want 5358403582048503948 guy friends then this is the place for you.
Plebe traditions or hazing?
Come-arounds- everyday they get rated on ships, missles, etc. It really sucks.
Articles-talk about 3 articles in the newspaper at meals
Bets- it's not hazing but probably the closet thing to it. A Firstie would place a bet on a plebe on anything. Depending on the Firstie the plebe can either deny it or they have no choice but to bet. If he wins it they get privileges that plebes don't usually have, like no chopping or something. If he loses...hehe. When I was walking to class today some plebe came running by with a broom between his legs and a witche's hat! Before noon formation there was a small civil war reanactment in front of Bancroft Hall. It gets pretty crazy but they are hilarious! The plebes overall are cool with how things are and the only thing they seem to complain about is getting rated.

Kilimanjaro-For Napsters to get into USNA we have to have a 2.0 gpa and pass the PRT-physical readiness test, which I finally did two weeks ago!!!! Plus we still need to apply for a nomination for next year.

juniormom- That's hilarious about what you said about your father! I'm sure a lot of the traditions here are preserved yet something is changed each year. Best wishes for your son.

speaking of which, ATTENTION ALL FOUR EYES:
Walking around the campus you'll see some mids in sunglasses, there are several of them. They just completed lazer eye surgery here.
They have blankets covering the windows and can't turn the light on their rooms. Cool huh?! Well the point is a lot of people come here and at NAPS with eye waviers, it's just takes longer to go through the process. It's poop, but hang on.
love ya

~Emily~

N.E.- Rice Pudding

GO NAVY, EAT RICE! yummy

We just started marking period 2. I ended mp1 with and 2.2 gpa and a D for the PRT. Everything is merit based so anyone with a 3.0 or higher and a B on PRT gets unlimited overnight liberities on weekends. So I only get three overnights this marking period.

I got a rejection letter from my senator so I didn't get a nomination from him this year (which is weird because I didn't apply). My other senator's application is due this week but I don't think I'll finish it in time. My congresswoman's is due in December so I'll hopefully get that one.

Other than that same ol' same ol'

Hah, so THAT explains all the betting my squad participated in at the Summer Seminar! We made soooooo many bets with our Squad Leader (and won them all, I'm proud to say. Yes, even the one where my roommate and I had to get 175 phone numbers--with no paper).

Anyways, I'm really excited about going to visit next weekend. I guess there'll be a pep-rally since they're playing Rutgers at home. Anyone going to the CVW staying for the game?

marines4me
We are staying for the game. We have family up at Annapolis so there are 15 of us going. You can get tickets online Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins. Should be a fun time we got 3 parking places next to each other to tailgate before/after the game too. You can call 1-800-US4-NAVY or go online @ <a href="http://www.navysports.com/sports/football/index.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.navysports.com/sports/football/index.asp</a> Hope to see you there!

Have fun Marines4me! I want to hear all about it when you get back. I can't take my SS sweatsuit. It has red dirt stains all over it that would not come out. :-( How did you guys get by without getting any stains on yours? Oh well, I have another Navy sweatsuit I'm taking. Geez, I must be crazy for going in January. BRRRRRR!

The rally I went to was on a Thursday. They get pretty wild but it's great! And the games are great too. Don't worry about being cold because the tailgates always offer great food (and chili)!
This weekend we're taking another 4 hour bus ride to New Jersey, this time for the NAPS vs MAPS game.

beat army (prep)!
