Canadian with US green card, will graduate from US high school and work in US later. Not very interested in IB yet.
Low tuition for McGill, won’t get financial aid from BC as it’s need based.
McGill is certainly well known in the US. I do not see this as a problem in terms of working in the US.
The main issue with McGill might be that it is academically demanding. You have to want to work hard for four years. Montreal is an interesting place to spend four years.
BC without financial aid is going to be massively more expensive than McGill. Do you know what your budget is? Are you going to need to take on debt to attend BC?
Are you a senior? “Will graduate from US high school” either implies that you will in a year or two or three, or in the next week or so.
What criteria are you using to determine which school is stronger for you? McGill is a no brainer to me, but maybe there is something I am missing.
You get what you pay for.
And sometimes, you get what you overpay for.
BC would have more resources per capita than McGill as a whole, but Desautels would have its own dedicated resources and a great name in Canada.
In this case, the price differential is massive. Virtually impossible to justify as the differential is more than enough to pay for a M7 MBA. In fact, it may be enough to cover both a masters and a M7 MBA.
Yes, all true. I’m just thinking of the families I’ve spoken with about the hassles getting housing at McGill and the challenges getting the classes you need, or getting into any class you’re interested in. Sometimes it’s just not worth it because you pay in other ways. Not saying that there aren’t kids who don’t have great experiences at McGill. I just know some who didn’t. Given the difference, I’d pay the premium at Boston College . . . And I did.
I have heard some of that, too, and do not disagree. “Real” city schools come with that and I don’t like it either.
But the student seems to be making a UG business decision somewhat driven by US jobs and cost. Realize you did not say this but I hear people on CC often wondering about US business jobs with a McGill biz degree. From my experience, in the higher income professions like investment banking, they do quite well. The US employers look at McGill similarly to a US top 20.
Yes. Points well taken.
Boston College tuition $60,000/year. McGill tuition for a Canadian citizen US$8,000/year. You want this family to pay $208,000 more over 4 years to avoid a few hassles? A student avoids most hassles if they are self motivated.
Yes he will have to lease an off campus apartment in Montréal after first year for a lot less than an apartment in Boston. And course registration issues are limited to elective courses outside Desautels.
Thanks for the info.
How is job placement/internship chance if study in McGill and return states?
Someone said very few US companies do on campus recruitment, not easy to build connections.
Desautels has its own placement office. Many international companies recruit on campus and resumes/interview notes are forwarded to the US division if that is what you are interested in. My son is an American Desautels alumnus. His first job after graduation was with a French bank in New York City, He had his initial interview in Montreal.
That’s great to know, thanks a lot!
