Sorry for the repost, I put it in the wrong category before.
Hi everyone! I plan on applying to Boston College’s Undergraduate Business School in the fall of this year (2019). They just changed their early policy from early action to early decision, but Boston College is my first choice, so it didn’t affect my decision all that much. Based on my stats and ECs, what are my odds of being accepted in their ED pool this fall?
UW GPA: 3.65
W GPA: Around a 4.2
(I calculated these myself, my school uses a weird scale)
SAT: 1530
SAT Math 2: 750
SAT Literature: 750
Extracurriculars:
Finance Club President
Economics Club Vice President
Co-Host of a Weekly Business and Finance Podcast
Summer Internship at Morgan Stanley
Founder/CEO of an organization that donates to homlesss shelters and charities
Debate Captain
4 Year Student Council Member
Although your GPA is low for BC CSOM (or BC in general), your test scores are great and your ECs are very interesting, especially the podcast. I would say it’s a reach because of grades.
@privatebanker is an expert on all things BC and could likely advise you in your areas of interest.
It is very difficult to “chance” someone at schools like BC. If you look through the past year(s) decision threads, you’ll see many with stats higher than yours who did not get accepted, and then many with stats lower than yours who did get accepted.
We on CC have no insight into your school track record with BC and its academic rigor, your class rank, your teachers’ recommendations, or your essay.
We also don’t know if admitting you means the school would enhance or disrupt the “mosaic of students” they’re trying to create for the incoming class.
Even many adcoms will say they only know ones changes when they’re sitting at the table while that candidate’s application is being discussed.
How badly do you want to get into BC? Are you willing to spend every waking hour studying to try and pull your GPA up to improve your odds? Don’t laugh.
Besides the obvious shoo-ins, it will be impossible to chance anyone for ED since it is new. If you were applying under the old EA, I’d say a likely Defer for senior grades due to the lower rank/GPA. But with ED, no one knows but the ‘man behind the curtain.’
You’re competitive at most schools depending on how you shake out among your peers. As mentioned, if you’re in the top 10 percent of your class and your recommendations are good. I’d say you’re an excellent candidate.
If you’re more realistically stat strong and gpa solid but not in that top echelon it will matter who else is applying from your school and your school’s reputation at BC.
Just remember the mission is aligned to service and scholarship. Make sure you speak to that in an authentic way through your work as a current student.
It appears to me, having paid pretty close attention to real life cases they really do like to identify good people who also happen to be incredibly strong students. In that order and either being absent will make it much more difficult to judge.
Apply broadly to schools you would enjoy up and down the selectivity level. Doesn’t mean one is “better” than another. It just means the profiles are more competitive with yours. Many students peak a bit later or haven’t focused like they will in college, so don’t let that stuff get in your way.
@rickle1@privatebanker@jpm50@cptofthehouse@bluebayou Thank you all so much for the advice! Obviously it is very hard to chance anyone, college admissions seem to be becoming more and more convoluted. When it comes to recommendations, I have two fantastic teachers writing mine for me, one of which I have known since elementary school. As for my rank, my school is a private school, with only about 170 kids, so we don’t rank. However, I believe that I am the only one applying ED, and they offered admission to five out of ten applicants from my school last year. I’ll just keep my fingers crossed until December 15th! Thank you all!
