Even if it reeks of opinions, it's still supposed to be somewhat objective. Think about it, does you hating a school mean the school is bad? Not really. Does you preferring a school make the school better in the aspects that can be measured? Not necessarily.

I mean, there's subjectivity. A person might enjoy his community college experience a lot more than Harvard, but to say that it was better than Harvard (as objectively as possible) would be sheer folly. And it's folly to say MIT isn't on par with the top of the top. That would be insulting a lot of really smart kids, too. futurenyustudent, you may not like it, and to tell you the truth, MIT isn't my kind of school, but I'd feel like a moron if I was to claim it wasn't way up there. Just my thoughts.

ryanbis: We could get into a whole debate on objectivity and subjectivity. The point is that we should keep this thread as objective as possible. I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of those in academia would say that MIT's one of the best schools in the world. Clearly, most of the posters in this thread have a similar ranking of the Boston area colleges. futurenyustudent's the only poster who ranked MIT that low; his ranking was too subjective.

"Is NEU's mechanical engineering better than BU's?"

Generally, speaking Northeastern is considered by most people to be better than BU in engineering at the undergrad level. This would include Mech Eng. I would say that they are about the same in business. Northeastern gets the edge in international business though.

Wow, Boston has so many universities. Is Brandeis in Boston or near it? I don't really know anything about the school but I know two fairly smart people going there...

Wow, a spat over whether Northeastern's mechanical engineering program is better than BU's. What's next, a brawl over whether the grilled-cheese sandwiches in the cafeteria at Suffolk University are better than those at Mass. College of Pharmacy?

Northeastern: is better for undergraduates. Why? The faculty is more focused on teaching. In addition the engineering co-ops are amazing (600 companies worldwide). Students are aslo required to do a Senior capstone project.

Boston U: is better at the graduate level. Why? Faculty are more focused on research. This means there is more research funding available for grad students (stipends etc). BU is esp great if you are into biomed or photonics research.

I'd like to reiterate that Williams is like..what 2 hours away from Boston. It's not even in the same area. People, you can't associate all Mass. schools with Boston.

I don't understand how you can place Olin ahead of Tufts, Brandeis and BC considering that Olin hasn't even graduated a single class yet and only offers engineering majors.
