I live in the Boston area - and EVERYONE has heard of Tufts, and knows how excellent it is, certainly more in league with MIT and Harvard than BC & BU. Why is there constant Tufts-bashing? This doesn't occur for other top schools. And NEU above Tufts? Tufts is highly respected internationally and nationally, even if CC'ers have serious problems getting away from their computers to see that.

amen worldband

he obviously has a personal vendetta.

Didn't mean to get upset...

well considering that he's devoted a good number of his posts to bashing Tufts, I don't blame you. Smile, and ignore :)

Hey Worldband -- no need to get bent out of shape and call people morons.

I never said that Tufts was below Northeastern overall, just for certain programs. Go back and read my post again if you have to. No one school excels at everything; you know that. Point I'm trying to make is that Tufts just isn't on the radar screen for the average (read: man on the street) person in Boston. It's too small, doesn't have D-1 sports, doesn't get a lot of press or local media coverage like the other larger schools I've named. When I said the average person in Boston thinks very little of Tufts, I mean that in the most literal sense; ie people don't think about it/consider it for the reasons I just described (as well as in my previous post). And I thought I made it clear that this really doesn't matter. For kids aspiring to the top schools, of course they know about it and consider it one of the top schools in Boston!

Having said all that, does that mean I think Tufts is a worse school? Not by any stretch. Its unfortunate that you appear to have read it that way.

seeing as tufts has become a major topic on this post would you guys mind telling me Tufts ranks in its undergraduate program in biochemistry for someone considering majoring in that area like myself?? i mean regardless of sports etc. how does it rank...is it a good school??

an btw for those of you still confused about where williams is look here...williamstown is where williams is (boston is all the way on the east side of the map)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Williamstown_ma_highlight.png

theres a reason why there is the term 'tufts syndrome-' people use tufts as a fallback to the TOP schools. therefore, tufts gets top school caliber applicants. ergo, tufts would be in the next tier down from these top schools.

smile & ignore :) As truth & logic dictate beyond the confines of CC.

To answer Kemo's question: Tufts would be a great place to study biochem or any other traditional premed major. So would just about any school that you like. Ignore the hypersensitive Tufts people here and just visit for yourself-- make sure its somewhere you'd want to go for four or five years. If it is, then great. If not, its hard to go wrong elsewhere either. As far as rank goes, I don't think undergrad biochem programs are ranked and even if they are, they are likely tied to graduate programs' reputations and relatively meaningless anyway. Not anything to be overly concerned about.

And to Huskem -- there appears to be a truly "real" Tufts syndrome, wholly independent of the traditionally defined "Tufts Syndrome" that Tufts will reject overqualified applicants. Many (and I'll make it clear that not ALL!!!) people who attend Tufts and participate on this board are just way, way, way too sensitive to the infinitesimally slightest disregard of the school. Inferiority complex, anyone?

lol thnx a lot eng_dude ur answer actually made sense =D

just to clarify, my post (#68) was in no way a dis on tufts (its one of my favorite schools)- what i meant by the tier down from the top unis, was that while tufts is not quite on the level of the browns, columbias, dukes, etc, it definitely deserves to be considered in the next category down (emory, berkeley, etc)

I agree that common people in Boston don't think very much of Tufts. However, people who know about schools recognize it as one of the top schools in the Boston area.

It's better than BC, BU & Northeastern (and according to one guy on this thread, Williams).

In general, how would one rank Brandeis against Tufts academically?

Tufts is a good school, but Williams > Tufts, period.

you're forgetting Emerson College

"Is NEU's mechanical engineering better than BU's?"

Generally, speaking Northeastern is considered by most people to be better than BU in engineering at the undergrad level. This would include Mech Eng. I would say that they are about the same in business. Northeastern gets the edge in international business though.

By most people? Maybe by most non-engineers. But in the engineering world BU is generally considered much better than neu.

Drew,

Sorry to hear about that whole Vietnam thing.
