Boston Globe 8/16/2005: "Catholic watchdog group urges purging of BC professors"

Looks like the neoconservative fascists at the Newman Society are up to their tricks again…

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2005/08/16/catholic_watchdog_group_urges_purging_of_pro_death_professors/

"The publicity-seeking rhetoric and unfounded accusations of the Cardinal Newman Society are a disservice to Catholic colleges and universities and the church that they proudly serve."

Straight from the mouth of BC and couldn't have said it better myself.

I've never heard of this group but I think calling anyone fascists is counter-productive. Still, this quote made me particularly proud to be at BC. Sock it to 'em!:

"Boston College blasted the Newman Society yesterday as a fringe group bent on grabbing public attention at the expense of academic freedom"

^ From the article in today's Globe, not yesterday's AP:

I found a better article on this subject from Google News today. I was not aware of Leahy's "Catholic clause" for Allies. If true, that would be pretty disturbing. Not sure I trust the source though, since he seems to be a very disgruntled Catholic. Anyways, here's the article:

OK, sorry if you think fascist was a bad word choice, but John Paris, S.J. himselfs calls them a "Christian Taliban." I also liked the part about Bob Jones University. :)

Anyway the real point here is that BC is standing up for itself (and for Catholic universities in general) at a time when conservatism, or closed-mindedness seems to be growing within the Church (and the culture at large?) Fr. Reese's dismissal from America magazine and the silly statements on evolution by that Austrian cardinal seem to be setting the tone for this Papacy ... hopefully I am wrong. It should be interesting to see what statements come out of the WYD. I have already heard some great perspectives on NPR from German youth regarding birth control and blessing same-sex couples. Then they cut to the translation of the Cologne bishop saying how sex education was evil, etc. Basically contractictory positions, and yet there they were, side by side, celebrating the Pope's arrival together. It made me happy :)

In case any one is interested, here is an update from yesterday's Globe. More background about the shady Cardinal Newman Society:
