Boston University Admissions

At this point in time, I’m considered a below average student. Compared to all the of the kids nowadays casually getting 4.0s my 3.5 is pretty terrible. Nevertheless, I would like to know my chances at getting into Boston University.

My credentials:
-Senior in high school
-3.5 Unweighted GPA
-Part of HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) for two years now. Made it to state twice
-I did student council for a year but found that it was a complete waste of my time, the only topic that was discussed at the meetings was the pointless spirit weeks.
-I also tried Key Club for a year, also a waste of my time. We merely discussed reading books to the elderly instead of doing any actual volunteer work. I’m not sure my high school really knows what it’s doing.
-I got a 23 on my ACT. And god am I working on raising it. I loathe standardized tests and it is the biggest pain the butt for me to get a good score. Especially when it comes to the reading and science sections. 35 Minutes and 40 questions to weave your way through the long, drawn out and detailed passages. I always find myself utilizing every last second for each of these tests. I got a 12 on my writing, however. 25 English, 23 Math, 24 Reading, 19 science (Terrible, I know. I’m working on it). I am taking the test once more in October with hopes of getting a 28. Which in all honesty is highly unlikely given that there is a 5 point difference between my target score and my actual score. I’ve dedicated 2 hours a day solely for studying for this test so I’m hoping I can raise it at least to a 25. But my hopes are not particularly high. For this scenario, however, let’s say I did, in fact, get a 28.
-I partake in no sports or extra curricular activities. I’m not very talented at anything so I don’t have anything extraordinarily flashy to add to my resume.
-I’m not sure if colleges still look at this, but I am 97th in my class (Please pick up your jaw. I am an average student).
-As for my classes, I am taking Pre-Calculus for college credit, Contemporary issues for college credit, Anatomy and Physiology for college credit, College Composition for college credit, Human Body Systems, Creative Writing, and Public speaking my senior year.
-As for my previous years in high school I’ve taken all honors English courses and all AP history courses. AP U.S./World History prior to taking Contemporary Issues. As for English, I took Honors English II Sophomore year, Honors English III Junior year — a college credited course — and now I am taking college composition.
-I’ve taken no honors or AP science classes other than Honors Biology and Anatomy and Physiology
-No honors or AP math courses. To be 100% honest, I was put into a decelerated math class (Pre-Geometry/Pre-Algebra) my freshman year for whatever reason. So I took Algebra 1 my Sophomore year. I compensated by taking Algebra II and Geometry at the same time my Junior year and now I am taking Pre-Calculus.

I tried to be as thorough as I can without writing a book. These are the guts of my high school career. What are my chances at getting into Boston University? Thanks for reading

Given that the 25th/75th ACT for BU’s 2020 enrolled freshman is 28-32 and their average for 2021 was a 32, I would say a very high reach if not completely unlikely. Even if you got your ACT up substantially, which is statistically unlikely, your GPA is still far below the average 3.8 for 2021.

You may have a chance if you choose the CGS option but that would be a reach. Also the 32 ACT average for 2021 is for admitted students, not enrolled students.

@TomSrOfBoston It does not matter if the average ACT is for admitted students vs. enrolled; you’re speaking to a prospective student who is applying for admission so it matters who is admitted.

As they’ve mentioned above the ACT score needs work if you want to secure a solid chance. Just based on 2021’s scores and how BU is becoming more selective I would say anything in the 30+ range is a safe bet. Have you considered taking the SAT? Some score better on it because the time limits aren’t as crazy as the ACT. Also focus a lot on your essays and expressing how you the campus would benefit if you were a student there. If you have any questions feel free to message me!

anyone heard from BU yet? when is their decision date…

What are my chances of getting in??

I was looking around the ED I and II discussion threads and they mention how their messages on their portal are either “Our records” or “Thank you” and that those who had “Thank you” got accepted and those who had “Our records” were deferred/denied. Do you think its the same for RD candidates? Because right now mine says “Our records” and I applied Dec. 1st. I really it’s only for ED applicants and if its not, that my message changes soon…
