*Boston University Class Of 2016: Regular Decision Thread*

do you know how much fin aid BU gives? how good are they? my dad makes around 51,000 and my mother makes 17,000. they are seperated.

collegeparonia,

So I have been doing all this digging about this stuff. Respectfully, I’m sorry your parents are seperated. The first thing I found out is that is parents are in the situation that your are they look at the lower income range for when they put a package together. Take a look at college board under the “cost & financial”. Scroll down to “Financial Aid Statistics”.

There is a lot of information but think about this:

Average percent of need met: 89%
Average financial aid package: $34,378
Average indebtedness at graduation: $36,488

I really don’t know how this all works but they have a nice endowment so things may work out nice for you. Either way your going to college and things will be good for you. It’s not my place to say things I can only have my thought and some facts. I hope this helps you!

BU is definitely my number 1 school, and I applied CGS! we’re so close to a decision, but the wait is killing me!! I really hope we all get in!

RUkidding & collegeparonia, BU DOES NOT have a nice endowment, especially for a school its size. An endowment’s strength is based on the total amount divided by all of the students it is to support. BU’s endowment is about 1 billion. Harvard’s is 32 billion, the highest of all US universities. Harvard is need blind, as are all of the Ivy league schools, and a number of smaller schools, such as Williams and Amherst have large endowments for their student size. Bowdoin, another small school is committed to reducing student debt by only offering grants, and no loans in their financial aid packages. Back to BU, its ability to provide finaid often depends on its number of full pay students. Via the FAFSA website, you can find the “net cost” to attend BU. This is determined from all of the students who receive financial aid, the cost of a year of school minus the average financial aid package. If you did a FAFSA, you should have this information, specifically for BU, and any other school that you sent a FAFSA to. BU’s net cost is $28,500+. They are very clear about not being able to meet all need. In fact, on their financial aid website, they show scenarios, based on a students standing (SAT, GPA, Rank or top 5 or 10%) combined with family income and assets, they will provide an approximation of your chances to get aid, and the average package. Go to that website and check it out. At BU, the higher your stats are, the more likely you can get some level of aid. Check out the scenarios that they offer. It comes down to this, if you have the same level of need as another student, but you have a higher rank, higher SATs, better GPA, you are more likely to get a package than the student with not as strong credentials. BU likes to attract great students, that’s why it offers the various scholarships, Trustee, Presidential, Dean to name a few. BU generally attracts over 700 valedictorians to any newly admitted class. While that seems like a lot, MIT will have about 440 vals, or about 40 % of its class. MIT is also need blind, and has a pretty big endowment $13 billion plus, I believe, and 1/4th the number of freshman than BU does. Google college / university endowments and you should get a better sense. And check out the scenarios on the BU finaid website. Take care, Mr. VC

Applied to Sargent - I heard BU sends out RD as late as April 15th! Does anyone know for sure?

They say early April but I know for the past few years it’s always been around March 25, I applied to Sargent as well, what major @firstwave?

I applied to Sargent too. Which major @firstwave and @laxkid137??

I think decisions are coming soon! I just checked my applicant link account and, while my application status has not changed, under financial aid it changed from confirmation of getting my fafsa and CSS and that they’d let me know if they needed more info to “Your application is complete. A decision is pending.”. I’m hoping that is a good sign!

^To posters for 65, 66, & 67 respectively, do you have calculus, or AP Calc on your transcript. Sargent looks for it and prefers it. The stronger in math, the better.

Expect RD decisions around 5PM on one of the next three Fridays. I’d say the 23rd or 30th, as the 25th or 26th has been the mode in recent years. Schools seem to be releasing decisions earlier to allow more time to think, and perhaps to provide more time to court admits more effectively with a bevy of communication. Northeastern may be releasing in the next few days (last year March 13 was the RD release date).
Good luck! Mr. VC

I can’t wait to hear from BU communications! How difficult is that program in comparison to others?? What are the stats for that program?

@intermed I applied to Athletic Training, how about you?

I applied for Dietetics/Nutrition

did anyone apply to the Honors program? I did at the last second, but I have no way of gauging if I have a shot at getting in since I don’t know how many people typically apply with respect to how many spots there are.

Did anyone ever receive a call around January or February from a BU student asking if you had any questions?

I did. Do you think that means anything?

Applied to the school of communications for film. So nervous!!

@february94, I got a call from an admissions officer in December asking me if I had any questions, but that was it. @laurenkes7 I applied to School of Communications as well, but I applied for Mass Communications. Best of luck to you! :)

Mileeko would you consider yourself to have fairly competitive test scores and a good GPA?

@sethhg I have a 3.6 GPA, my SAT’s were decent. I applied for ED to COM, but I got deferred. But I know some people with lower stats that were admitted, and some with higher stats getting deferred. So it’s really hard to say. I know BU takes extra curriculars, talents and etc. into consideration and I’m completely set for that aspect.

i checked my applicant link and it says that they reviewed my application for COM. I’m so nervous, BU is my number one school! my cousin (who lives with me) is a CAS’14 student and she loves it so much. Only a little over one week until decisions come out! I got in to my second choice, University of Florida (because I’m from FL), but i really just want to leave Florida and move to the northeast, Boston in particular.

Good luck to everyone!
