Boston University isn't worth 200K, right?

BU has always been my top choice school, so I was so excited when I was accepted into the School of Education.
However, I received no scholarships and my family doesn’t qualify for financial aid, so we would be paying 53K a year for BU.
I got into Mount Holyoke with a 15K per year scholarship, and I’m leaning towards that even though I don’t think I like the location and the idea of an all-girls school.
Debt isn’t an issue; my parents can pay. But I don’t want to waste money. 50K per year is a lot, and they are already paying 55K per year for my sister at med school.
My dad said that if I went to Mount Holyoke, he would give me 60K(for the scholarship) later on. We have the money, but we don’t want to waste it.
So does anyone pay full tuition at BU? Is it worth it?

For an education major, I would say to go to Mount Holyoke. I agree that BU isn’t worth attending without any financial aid, but, then again, it is your number one choice, so you should consider which you would be happier attending as well. Settling for a women’s college may make you regretful.

We are in the same boat as you are. Our D is deciding between BU and Fordham and Fordham is $61,000/yr which is so unbelievable to me. We don’t qualify for financial aid and D did not receive scholarships at either. All of her safeties offered nice scholarships but of course she does not to go to any of them now.

My advice would be, if money is not a problem, go to the place that you feel is the best fit for you. It will not be a waste of money if you are happy and work hard.

I would actually be majoring in math, and getting teaching certification. (So probably an education minor.)
I thought BU was really good for education. Is Mount Holyoke better for it? (I’m not trying to argue with you. I honestly have no idea; I don’t know too much about Mount Holyoke.)
I feel like I would never have considered a women’s college before, but some aspects of it seem nice.

My parents are split on this, by the way. My mom wants me to go to BU because it’s closer to home and she has heard the name before. (She’s never heard of Mount Holyoke.)
My dad wants me to go to Mount Holyoke because of the scholarship.
We have the money saved, but I’m not sure if it would be wise to spend it all. Then my parents would be spending 110K a year (on me and my sister.)
My dad isn’t very open about finances to me, so I’m not too sure. But they both basically told me that the choice was all mine.
Oh, and UMASS Amherst is still an option, but I’d rather not go there.

Haha, to be honest, I don’t know much about it either. It is a lot of money, but I think you would be a lot happier at BU if it is truly where you want to go. That’s the best advice I can give, because I am worried that I will choose the wrong college and regret it in the fall. I find out about USC this weekend, so I really hope that comes through.

Your dad would PAY 60k you because of a scholarship? Jesus. Is your dad’s name by any change Willard?

Don’t be so quick to write off UMass. If you want a big school experience like BU, it’s a viable alternative. As a BU Law grad with a son at UMass, I’m frankly not convinced that BU is worth over twice the cost of UMass. Besides, if you go to UMass, you can take classes at Mt Holyoke under the 5 College Consortium. So far I’ve been very impressed with UMass and my son is enjoying his experience there. The only reason in my opinion to go to BU is if you want the urban college experience and money is no object. Amherst is a wonderful college town.

My son attends BU as a freshman and loves it. If money is not really an issue, go with your top choice. Maybe you could visit both schools again get a real feel now that you know you’re in. Boston is a wonderful college town and is really quite different from Amherst (another son attended for a year). However, UMass does have the consortium and is a good school for the money especially. I personally like BU better because I think it has a great reputation and Boston has so much to offer. Good luck!

Based on what I know, Mt.Holyoke is one of the sister ivy league colleges, hard to get in and has great reputation especially if you wish to go for higher studies in business, law etc. Good luck!

MHC is part of the consortium including UMass, Amherst, Smith and Hampshire. You will meet plenty of other kids, of both sexes. Go to MHC,

I would side with BU. I don’t want to judge the school without even researching it, but college is supposed to be about gaining life experience and exploring options. MHC just sounds depressing and conservative.

I hadn’t heard of it either so apparently it doesn’t have much of a national reputation, unlike BU.

Are those your only two options? I’m going to community college to save money so I can transfer to BU. Seems like a good situation with only a few downsides.
