Which is better for a communications major? International Studies major? Languages major?

Which is closer to the city? I have heard BU, but I don't really know Boston.

I know with Northeastern there's a CO-OP program...and I don't know how I feel about it. What are your opinions on both of these colleges? I'd rather go for the one that is harder to get into.

Both colleges are IN the city.

BU is a better school academically and is “harder to get into.”

That said, there are a lot of other factors.

BU is definitely better in communications, and in general better academically and more selective. Both are conveniently located in the city.

I would say BU is better for communications and is slightly more competitive to get into. They are both located right in the city of Boston, not too far away from each other. BU has less of a campus feel however opposed to Northeastern. BU is spread out along the Charles River and the buildings of the University just stretch down the street. Both schools are rather large as well and offer many many programs, schools, and majors. Northeastern’s campus feels more secluded within the city. It has its own area opposed to BU which is more spread out and looks no different than regular city buildings besides the red signs on each building. Northeastern has grassy lawns, is a bit more quitter, and feels a bit less urban. Northeastern’s buildings look very modern as well. Another cool fact is that Northeastern has underground tunnels connecting academic buildings so students don’t need to venture out in the cold in the middle of the Boston winter. Also please note that you would graduate in 5 years if you go to Northeastern. Everyone is required to do a co-op which some people love while some don’t. It’s just a different college experience. Neither school has a huge sense of community/big sports (other than hockey). BU and Northeastern are pretty similar and get a lot of cross-admits and IMO are pretty much on the same level academically.

I was admitted to both Northeastern and BU last year and chose NEU for various reasons. Academically you cannot distinguish BU being superior to NEU. Both schools are similar and I believe BU is slightly bigger than Northeastern population wise. One of the main catalyst that drove me to NEU was the coop program and it is true for CERTAIN majors it is a requirement but for others its not. A lot of the majors let you substitute research/study abroad programs for coop so there is some flexibility. Students CAN graduate in 4 years in addition to participating in two coops.

As for selectivity the student body at both schools are relatively similar. Northeastern has an acceptance rate of 35% compared to BU at 55% making Northeastern slightly more selective. For additional info use the search function this has been brought up in several threads. Good luck

I am familiar with both schools and they are similar. I actually transferred out of BU to a smaller engineering school. BU definitly has an impersonal feel to it and you certainly feel like another number. The campus is spread out along comm ave. NEU has a nice enclosed campus.

The big reason to go to NEU is co-op. If you’re not totally sold on the co-op concept, my suggestion would be to go to BU. BU may not have a traditional campus, but NEU doesn’t have a traditional college feel either - at any given time of the year a lot of your friends will be not in class, but “co-opping” full time.

BU is good for communications but you can’t go wrong with NEU either because of the co-op program
