Boston University?

Hey all! I’m going into Engineering and I’m debating between UBC (Canada) and Boston University. I know a lot about UBC because I am Canadian but I would love to hear more about BU before I make my decision! How are classes/ social life/etc? If anyone could share their experiences & if they would recommend BU that would be very helpful  thanks!

Unless you have a full tuition scholarship to BU there is no rationale for choosing it over UBC. UBC is overall a better school and a heck of a lot cheaper.

@TomSrOfBoston I’ve only been accepted to sciences and waitlisted for Engineering at UBC. I’d have to switch faculties after my first year which I’ve heard is really difficult, so I might not even be able to. And then with BU I’m actually accepted into my first choice program and their biomedical eng program is one of the best in the country. That’s why I’m still considering both, otherwise I agree with you - UBC is overall the better option.

BU isn’t pretty, but has a great location. Very easy to get just about anywhere you’d want to.go in just a few minutes via foot or trolley/subway. Lots of other colleges around, so there is always a party somewhere. Hockey team is usually very good and students love going to the game (no football). Very close to museums and theaters and concerts & classical music venues. Fenway Park is walking distance if u like baseball.

Would you want to practice engineering in Canada or the US? That would be the deciding factor for me (I’m a structural engineer).

UBC is accredited by Engineers Canada and ABET recognizes that as equivalent to its own accreditation.

Also tuition at BU is US$48,000/year and at UBC about C$10,000/year.

@TomSrOfBoston, since you are on the topic of accreditation, can you please share your thoughts on
Northeastern’s Bio engineering program not being accredited by ABET. Does that pose a risk for students enrolling there for undergraduate program when they apply to graduate schools

Northeastern’s bioengineering program is new and no new program can be accredited until the first class has graduated. That is the way accreditation works. NU will not risk the embarrassment of not getting accredited so they are putting a lot of money into the new department.
